Columbus, Ohio – The No. 16 Ohio State men’s swimming and diving program wrapped up the Ohio State Invite with a second-place finish on Sunday afternoon at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes scored a team total 780.50 points to defeat No. 13 Notre Dame (676.50 points).
The fifth-ranked NC State men’s team took the team title with 1,118.50 points. The women’s team (No. 23 in nation) took fourth place with 642 points behind No. 18 Notre Dame (656 points), No. 12 NC State (669.50) and No. 17 Kentucky (733 points).
Meg Bailey, Freya Rayner and Lara Tarvit all claimed gold medals on the final day of swimming and diving for the Ohio State Invite. Bailey, Ohio State’s only two-event winner this weekend, returned to the water Sunday morning for the prelims of the 200 butterfly a day after claiming gold in the 400 individual medley. The junior found herself trailing two other swimmers at the halfway mark of her championship race, and from there, she turned on the burners. Bailey split 29.82 and 29.87 on the final two laps of the race to take the top spot; her two sub-30 second splits were the only ones of the race in the final 100 yards.
Rayner swam her best race as a Buckeye yet in the final of the 100 freestyle. Entering the finals as the co-favorite, Rayner dropped her career best by .71 seconds to eclipse the rest of the field and finish with a time of 48.43 for the gold. On the women’s platform, Lara Tarvit beat out 23 other divers for the top spot with a score of 267.65 for the win.
On the men’s side, the men’s diving crew registered a one-two-three sweep of the podium spots on the platform. Christo Law paced the way with an incredulous 382.25 for his sixth title of the year. Clay White (367.40) and Jacob Siler (355.40) earned the two other podium spots for Ohio State, but the Buckeyes did not stop there. Aaron Daniels-Freeman (349.80/fourth place) and Stephen Romanik (332.20/sixth place) used solid scores to help Ohio State capture five of the top six spots.
In the pool, Michael Salazar recorded the highest finish by the Buckeyes with a silver in the 100 butterfly with a personal-best readout of 46.36. In that same race, sophomore Noah Lense collected a fourth-place finish with a 45.52. Freshman Paul DeLakis swam himself into a fourth-place showing in the 200 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 1:58.04.
