Ohio State Department of Athletics Credentialing Policies
The Ohio State University Department of Athletics issues credentials for event coverage based on multiple factors that together are intended to provide a working atmosphere conducive to professional media coverage and best practices.
Credentialing priority for all sports is given to professional media outlets that cover Ohio State athletics on an active, consistent and comprehensive basis. Authorized outlets have full-time staff and are established in the business of news gathering and news disseminating as their primary source of revenue, and have a history of comprehensive coverage.
Criteria
Ohio State issues credentials to media members with a legitimate working function to be at the event for the purpose of same day or next day coverage, including the following:
- Full-time writers, reporters, videographers and photographers on assignment for established news gathering and news disseminating organizations (including newspapers, radio stations with a sports director and regular daily sports shows and over the air TV networks);
- Student journalists and broadcasters from Ohio State representing The Lantern and Scarlet & Gray Sports Radio, and student journalists and broadcasters affiliated with Ohio State’s opponent;
- National photography agencies such as Associated Press, Getty and Imagn (USA Today);
- Full-time staff from websites affiliated with a national network/organization (espn.com, cbssports.com, The Athletic, etc.); and
- Full-time staff from regional sports websites that are recognized as news gathering and news disseminating websites with a history of comprehensive coverage of Ohio State teams and Ohio State Athletics Department news.
Additional Information and Protocols
Ohio State does not credential personal and/or freelance blogs or websites, social media channels (X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) and photographers.
Ohio State does not grant credentials to individuals with “fan-submitted” or un-edited websites that are not affiliated with established news gathering and news disseminating organizations.
Credentials will not be issued to individuals from websites whose sole entity is fan-generated responses and message boards that allow the posting of anonymous comments.
Credentials will not be issued to representatives whose outlet exists as a platform that exists solely for distributing unoriginal content (press releases, aggregate news sites, etc.).
Additional consideration for credentials may be based on amount of original content generated, number of full-time employees of the outlet, length of existence of the outlet and the journalist experience of the reporter(s).
Receiving credentials from another institution, organization or event does not equate to meeting the criteria for credentials at Ohio State University. Being granted credentials for one Ohio State event does not guarantee approval for other Ohio State events.
Ohio State University has the right to deny or revoke credentials at its discretion.
Credentialed media must abide by
