Columbus, Ohio – The first day of the Ohio State Invite is in the books and the No. 23 Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team is in first place with a team tally of 206 points. The men’s team, ranked 16th in the nation, is in second place with 232.5 team points.
A total of 12 events (six women and six men) were contested on day one of the OSU Invite. No. 5 NC State leads the men’s competition with 342 points, and No. 12 NC State (women) trails Ohio State with 200.5 points. Full results listed below – full recap to come.
The best event for the Buckeye women on day one was the 50 freestyle. The Scarlet and Gray had three women qualify for the A finals and they took advantage of it. Macie McNichols was Ohio State’s top finisher in the race with a 22.60 to garner bronze. Maria Coy (sixth place/22.70) and Cheyenne Meek (23.06/ninth place) were the other two sprinters to make the A finals.
Meg Bailey and Kathrin Demler also had impressive swims in the 200 individual medley A finals. Bailey finished with a time of 1:57.13 for a third-place finish and Demler dipped under the two-minute mark with a readout of 1:59.75. The best relay finish of the night for the women came in the 200 freestyle. The foursome of Freya Rayner, Maria Coy, Macie McNichols and Cheyenne Meet put together a collective time of 1:29.02 to earn silver. Molly Kowal began the A finals in the 500 freestyle with a fifth-place finish touching the dock with a time of 4:42.48.
The top individual event for the men on the first day of the meet was the 500 freestyle led by the charge of Brayden Seal and Nick Hogsed. Seal (fifth place) used his stamina to put together a quality race with a time of 4:21.48, and Hogsed followed less than three seconds behind for a time of 4:23.04 and a ninth-place showing.
The best relay finishes four the men came in the opening race of the finals session and the last one. The quartet of Andrew Loy, Ching Hwang Lim, Kevin Musterait and Mossimo Chavez swam the 200 free relay in a swift time of 1:19.12. Putting a cap on the first night of competition, the 400 medley relay group of Mark Belanger, Jack Barone, Michael Salazar and Nathan Christian finished in fourth with a time of 3:12.84.
