It was a hard fought battle for a Buckeye victory against No. 23 Boston University.
Ohio State was put to the test early, with the Terriers scoring a goal in the first 15 minutes of the contest. Ohio State secured their footing and played a solid game. The defense stepped up in a big way, allowing only 7 shot attempts the whole game while Ohio State took 21 shots total.
Leanne Bough recorded her second goal for the season early in the second quarter. She was followed by fellow freshman Mackenzie Allessie early in the third quarter, notching her first collegiate goal. Tess Maloney scored the last Ohio State goal, her first career goal, assisted by Sina Schwinn.
The crowd at Buckeye Varsity Field enjoyed the second Ohio State Field Hockey victory of Labor Day weekend. Attendance was recorded as the second highest in the past five years with sunny skies.
Boston U’s goalkeeper was put to the test with 21 shots by Ohio State, and recorded 12 total saves. The scarlet and gray defense was a collaborative effort, and Aaliyah Hernandez recorded one save in her 60 minutes of playing time.
Ohio State now has 10 goals for the season, tied for Maryland as the most in the Big Ten.
QUICK QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JARRED MARTIN
On the freshmen’s impact so far this season: “They’ve been great. I would say, I want everybody scoring. But to have the comfort level that they can get on the field and be aggressive, that’s a huge step. It doesn’t matter what you did last year, it doesn’t matter what you did the day before, you have to be ready to go. For the freshmen to step on the field like that and for the upperclassmen to welcome that makes a difference.”
On the defense after the opening goal by BU: “The defense for the most part did a pretty good job. We tested our defense, and I don’t know if that’s ideal. I said it to them at halftime, but that’s probably the worst start any field hockey team could have and for them to respond and bounce back… they seem like they stayed connected, they didn’t get rattled, and they were able to respond. The start wasn’t ideal but the response I think was great.”
On what has made the Buckeyes successful so far: “I think the movement and the number that we try to get up around the goal cage is something we’ve been talking about. We have some pretty good ball handlers so if we put those people out there and we are aggressive around the mouth of the goal, when the moment comes you feel confident and you can put the ball in the back. I thought we did a good job today, we are creating a lot of chances and it’s finding the calmness to execute the skill that you need to. Hopefully we can keep that up, we have a couple more good teams coming up next weekend.”
