COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Buckeyes have done it again. On a warm night in Harrisonburg, Va., Ohio State recorded its second shutout victory of the season and improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over James Madison. The Buckeyes have not started a season with three consecutive victories since they won four straight to start the 2008 season. Additionally, Ohio State hasn’t been 3-0 with two shutouts since the 2000 season.
The victory was decided in the first half of the contest, with all three goals coming from the second quarter.
Junior captain Nikki Trzaska started things off, tipping in a goal just 33 seconds in. Six minutes later she added a second goal in front of a crowded goal. In the 24th minute, freshman Mackenzie Allessie topped it off when she fired a successful shot into the left corner to put the Buckeyes up three. All three goals were unassisted.
Ohio State was only awarded two penalty corners throughout the game while JMU was awarded one. The two teams each had seven shots.
The Dukes generated four shots in the fourth quarter, but goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez and the rest of the defensive unit stepped up again and was able to keep James Madison off the scoreboard.
GAME NOTES
- Buckeyes are now 1-0 in road games.
- Nikki Trzaska leads the team in goals with three. She had two goals in her career prior to this season.
- Four Buckeyes now have multiple goals on the season: Trzaska, Allessie, freshman Leanne Bough and senior Esther Clotet Alsina.
Head Coach Jarred Martin on the victory: “I’m happy for the win and to get a shutout against a very dangerous James Madison team. We had a good first half, we were connecting passes and efficient with our movements. The second half saw less possession and we need to get better with our focus and consistency to maintain a high level. Credit to JMU with its defensive pressure and intensity. We started turning the ball over way too easily and our off-ball movement wasn’t helping. Overall, we found great plays to finish some goals and our defensive unit stayed connected to limit JMU’s attacking threats. We will recover, watch some film, and get back at it tomorrow to prepare for a talented UVA team.”
The Buckeyes will head to No. 11 Virginia in Charlottesville next with a second road contest slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
