COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a career outing by junior right-handed starting pitcher Ryan Feltner, the Ohio State baseball team was edged by Minnesota, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. Feltner, from Hudson, Ohio, worked the longest outing of his career in seven innings and tied his season-high with nine strikeouts, allowing one unearned run in a no decision performance.

The Buckeyes fall to 27-13 overall and 8-6 in Big Ten play. Minnesota, who improves to 28-11 overall and 11-2 in Big Ten play, claimed the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth on a double steal play. The throw down to second base was kicked away on the tag at that bag, allowing Gopher lead-off hitter Luke Pettersen to score from third base.

GAME SUMMARY

– Ohio State got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Noah McGowan drove in his 48th RBI of the year on a sac fly to plate Dominic Canzone. The OSU lead-off hitter, Canzone put the Buckeyes within 90 feet of the run after a single, sac bunt and stolen base.

– Minnesota tied the game in top of the fourth after an OSU error. With a runner on second, a fielding error at first base allowed Cole McDevitt to cross the plate.

– After allowing three straight hits, Feltner got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the second with a fly out to Cowles in left. The OSU right-hander spotted his fastball well against the Gopher hitters and kept them off-balance, striking out nine over seven innings and scattered eight hits with one unearned run in a no decision.

– Ohio State went to the bullpen to begin the eighth. Right-handed reliever Kyle Michalik retired the first two outs of the frame and gave up one hit. Left-handed reliever Griffan Smith received the loss to drop to 2-1 on the year. He threw 0.2 innings and gave up one unearned run on hit with a walk. Right-handed reliever Seth Kinker threw the final 0.2 innings and struck out one.

GAME NOTES

– The Buckeyes left six on base while the Gophers stranded 12.

– Feltner had the longest outing of his career today with seven innings and tied his season high with nine strikeouts.

– Foppe extended his reached base streak to a career-high 23-consecutive games. It’s the longest reached base streak of the season by a Buckeye and longest since former Buckeye Nick Sergakis had a 28-game reached base streak in 2018.

– McGowan’s 17-game reached base streak ended today.

– Canzone registered his 18th multi-hit game. He extended his reached base streak to seven games.

– Kinker made his 98th career appearance today. He is four appearances away from tying the OSU all-time record (Trace Dempsey, 102).
