KENT, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team dropped an 8-3 contest at Kent State on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at Schoonover Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 19-8-1, while the Golden Flashes improve to 20-8 in 2016.
BATS LIMITED EARLY ON
Ohio State left four on vs. lefty Kent State starter Connor Wollersheim, who improved to 3-1, throwing 5.2 innings on no runs, three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. In the second, Troy Kuhn doubled to right center with one down, but was stranded on third base. The Buckeyes left a pair on in the fourth after Wollersheim struck out his fourth batter of the afternoon. Right-handed reliever Chris Martin allowed no runs or hits in the sixth and seven innings.
KENT STATE SCORING PLAYS
Kent State scored seven times on eight hits in the first three frames. Dylan Rosa knocked a one-out single up the middle to put the Golden Flashes ahead, 1-0. Ohio State freshman starter right-hander Ryan Feltner labored in the first, but limited the damage with back-to-back strikeouts to keep it a one-run deficit. In the second, Kent State loaded the bases following two walks and a bunt single. A sac fly to center field pushed the second run home. A failed pickoff attempt made it a 3-0 game. Feltner fired in a fastball on a 3-2 pitch to claim his third strikeout and retire the side. In the third, a RBI double to left center by Conner Simonetti and RBI single to left by Sam Hurt made it 5-0 for the Flashes. A two-out, two-run single to left field by Zarley Zalewski scored two more. Kent State added an eighth run in the eighth on a two-out RBI double.
NO QUIT IN THE BUCKS
Despite being kept off the board in the first eight innings, the Buckeye bats continued to battle at the plate at the end of the game. In the ninth, the Scarlet and Gray crossed the plate board three times highlighted by a two-out, two-run home run by freshman Brady Cherry. Jalen Washington also had a sacrifice fly in the inning.
ON THE HILL
Feltner had a short outing in his sixth start of the year, allowing three runs, two earned, three hits with two walks and four strikeouts to drop to 1-2. Redshirt junior left-hander Joe Stoll relieved Feltner to begin the third inning. He lasted one frame and gave up four runs on five hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Redshirt sophomore right-hander Austin Woodby threw the next two innings and limited the Flashes to three hits, no runs with three strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore right-hander Seth Kinker followed with a zero on the board in the sixth on a hit and strikeout. Senior left-hander Michael Horejsei threw a scoreless seventh with a pair of punch outs. Redshirt sophomore Yianni Pavlopoulos allowed a run on one hit, one walk and one strikeout in the eighth.
