Shaun Richard currently serves as Executive Associate Athletics Director for Sport Administration at The Ohio State University after being promoted from Senior Associate Athletics Director in 2021. He has been with the department since 2013. His current responsibilities include sport oversight of men’s soccer, field hockey, men’s ice hockey, women’s gymnastics, men’s gymnastics and baseball. In addition, he oversees Ohio States athletic ticket operations and premium seating for eleven ticketed sports, equipment room operations, the Ohio State Golf Club and oversight of the largest collegiate Nike contract in the country.
He currently represents the athletics department on the Big Ten Sports Management Committee, the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Committee and serves on the advisory board for the Sports and Society Initiative at Ohio State.
During his tenure, multiple teams have won conference and tournament championships under his supervision (fencing (2014-2017), men’s soccer (2015), men’s gymnastics (2016 & 17), men’s hockey (2019) and baseball (2019). This also includes a top 5 NCAA finish for fencing from 2013-2017, top 3 NCAA finishes for men’s gymnastics in 2016 & 2017, a NCAA men’s hockey Frozen-Four appearance in 2018 and a NCAA regional final appearance for women’s gymnastics in 2022.
During the 2022-23 fiscal year, Richard led external units in generate over $100 million in revenue through work as the co-chair of a revenue generating committee. This included the highest single year ticket revenue in Ohio State history, multiple contract negotiations and revenue generating events.
In 2016, Richard led an internal team that secured an international soccer match in historic Ohio Stadium featuring Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. This match required the installation of a grass soccer pitch over the existing football turf and was played as part of the International Champions Cup. It saw 86,641 fans in attendance, which broke the record for the largest attended soccer game in the state of Ohio.
In 2022, Richard worked with the Haslam Sports Group and the Cleveland Browns to produce the Faceoff on the Lake hockey game between Ohio State and Michigan at FirstEnergy Stadium. Ohio State came away with a 4-2 win in front of 45,523 fans which set a record for an outdoor college hockey game held at a neutral site.
Prior to arriving at Ohio State, Richard was the Associate Director of Athletics for External Operations at Colgate University. He originally joined Colgate’s athletic department in November 2008 as the Assistant Director of Athletics.
At Colgate, Richard oversaw the external operations of the department, including marketing and promotions, sponsorships, branding, game contracts and athletic facilities operations. He also oversaw the sports information department, ticket office and was the department liaison for fundraising and alumni affairs.
In addition to his external responsibilities Richard supervised football, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis and golf. He represented Colgate on the Patriot League’s Sports Management Committee, Facility Managers Committee, Market and Promotions Committee and was the liaison to ECAC Hockey and Daktronics Sports Marketing. On campus, he was a member of the Campus Master Planning Committee, Campus Planning & Physical Resources Committee, Campus Identity Committee (University Branding), the Emergency Management Team and the Colgate Athletics Hall of Honor Committee. Prior to these committees, Richard served on the Faculty Affairs Committee, the Hamilton Pedestrian Safety Committee, Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), Men at Colgate Committee and was the athletic department liaison for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Prior to his appointment to Associate Director of External Operations, he oversaw event management operations for all 25 sports home events. He served as the direct contact for visiting teams, officials and oversaw 100+ event staff employees. He was the tournament manager for various ECAC Hockey and Patriot League tournament games, including men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, women’s tennis, golf and men’s ice hockey. In addition to home events, Richard was the main contact for the Cape Cod Classic hockey game in Hyannis, Mass.; the Colgate vs. Cornell men’s ice hockey game played at the Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils, and the men’s lacrosse game vs. Michigan at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.
During his time at Colgate, Richard raised sponsorship dollars by nearly 300% through both local and national partnerships, while creating a variety of new opportunities including a new Colgate Athletics ice cream flavor, Kids Zone ticket promotions and various new signage opportunities. Richard oversaw a rise in membership in both the Jr. Raiders program and the student Rowdy Raider program.
Outside of Colgate, Richard has been a panelist speaker at NACDA discussing external relationship topics, taught a high school winter session course on athletics administration at Colgate and co-published (V. Chun) “Into the Hills” in Athletics Management on marketing in a rural area. Article
Prior to his time at Colgate, Richard worked as an Operations Manager for the Jason Taylor Foundation in Miami, Fla in 2008-2009. During his time with the Foundation, he planned and organized fundraising events; coordinated appearances and business opportunities for the NFL standout; oversaw the website and organized a voting campaign for Taylor on ABC’s hit TV show, Dancing with the Stars.
Prior to him moving to the Jason Taylor Foundation, Richard worked in the Operations Department for the Miami Dolphins from 2005-2008. During his time in the NFL, Richard oversaw the Dolphins Training Camp operations, coordinated sponsor related events and held various game day responsibilities. Richard was part of the Dolphins advance team for away games, including the first NFL regular season game played in London during the 2007 season at Wembley Stadium. He coordinated game day credentials for Super Bowl XLI and oversaw the pregame tunnel and halftime set-up for the 2006 & 2007 Orange Bowl games.
The North Adams, Mass., native graduated from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 2003 with a degree in Business Administration, where he was also a two-time all-conference performer on the Trailblazer baseball team. In 2019, Richard was inducted into the MCLA athletic hall of fame. The two-time captain was also a member of the North Adams Steeplecats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) during the 2002 season and won the gold medal in Apledoorn, Holland as part of the American International Sports Tour baseball team in 2003. Richard then moved onto Springfield College, where he earned his master’s degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Administration in 2005. While working towards his degree, he served a dual role as a graduate associate for the Springfield Athletic Department and an assistant coach for the Pride baseball team.
Richard currently resides in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife Molly and daughter Delaney.
