Buckeyes have won 12 consecutive games and are 29-6-1 overall
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State added to its nation-leading home run total of Saturday and also extended its winning streak to 11 consecutive games with a doubleheader sweep of Indiana at Buckeye Field. Ohio State is now 29-6-1 on the season and 6-1 in Big Ten play while Indiana is 22-10 and 2-5 in the conference. The Buckeyes won the first game 7-1 and then needed five innings for a 12-4 run-rule win the second game to complete the sweep.
The wins was made possible by more power hitting – seven home runs and two doubles in the two games – and an efficient and effective outing in the circle from freshmen Lorin Boutte, junior Kennedy Kay and freshman Layna Gerhard.
Boutte's complete game-two hitter to start the day was complemented by home runs from Hadley Parisien, Taylor Cruse, Reagan Milliken and Sami Bewick. In the second game of the day, Kami Kortokrax, Milliken and Farley all left the yard in the fifth inning to complete the 12-4 triumph.
How It Happened
- The first game of the day started as a bit of a pitchers duel, but that would change in the bottom of the third inning when Hadley Parisien and Sami Bewick sent back-to-back home runs over the left field wall to put the Buckeyes up 2-0.
- Indiana cut the lead in half the following inning with a solo shot to center field off the bat Briana Copeland.
- Ohio State wasted no time in responding in the bottom half of the fourth. After consecutive two-out walks, Taylor Cruse sent a towering three run homerun to left field, scoring Morgan Frye and Skylar Limon and putting the Buckeyes up 5-1. The homer was Cruse's 10th of the year and her fifth in the last two weeks.
- Once again with two-outs in the fifth inning, a walk was followed up by a two-run home run off the bat of Reagan Milliken, scoring Jasmyn Burns and rendering the score 7-1. The round-tripper gave Milliken her 50th and 51st RBIs of the season, good for second in the Big Ten.
- Lorin Boutté went the distance for her 13th win of the season against one of the best offenses in the Big Ten, allowing only one run, two hits, and striking out eight.
- Ohio State's early offense in the second game of the day came via clutch two-out hitting. Trailing 1-0 in the home half of the first, Burns, Farley and Limon all delivered run-scoring hits to put the Buckeyes up 4-1.
- In the bottom of the second inning, Burns and Milliken delivered bases loaded singles and Milliken worked a bases loaded walk to make the score 8-1.
- Indiana would hit home runs in the third and fourth innings to cut into the lead, but that merely set the stage for a barrage of Buckeye homers in the bottom of the fifth that ended the game.
- Kortokrax (solo), Milliken (two-run) and Farley (solo) all hit long balls to nearly the same part of the park – over the left centerfield wall – to complete the 12-4 run-rule win.
Buckeye This and That
- The seven home runs today render the Ohio State season total to 87 and the 24th game this year with multiple home runs.
- Hadley Parisien has gone yard in five of the last seven games and has recorded a hit in nine of the last 12 games. Her 13 homeruns on the year are second best among Buckeye hitters.
- After today's games, five Buckeyes have 10 or more home runs. Eight every day players have more than five.
- Boutté is now only 13 strikeouts shy of 100 this year and is averaging just over a strikeout per inning.
- Farley finished the day with a team-high four hits; she reached base in five of her seven plate appearances. Farley also raised her batting average to .360.
- Indiana came into the game hitting a Big Ten-best .390 but the Ohio State pitching staff limited the Hoosiers to just eight hits and a .178 team batting average.
