Ohio State drops 13-7 decision, heads to the West Coast for a midweek game Wednesday at Long Beach State
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 22nd-ranked Ohio State softball team saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end Monday night as the Buckeyes dropped a 13-7 decision to Indiana in the series finale. Despite the loss, Ohio State took two of three games from the Hoosiers to win the series.
The Buckeyes (29-7-1, 6-2 Big Ten) scored in the first, second, third and fifth innings, but couldn't string together a late-inning comeback after falling behind 12-4 in the fourth inning. The Hoosiers (23-10, 3-5 Big Ten) were led by Brianna Copeland, who struck out 13 batters and also hit three home runs.
How It Happened
- Indiana ended their half of the first inning up 3-0 via a Copeland home run, a sac fly, and an Ohio State fielding error.
- The Buckeyes cut into the deficit with two outs in the bottom of the first, with a no-doubt homer to center off the bat of Kami Kortokrax. Kortokrax has hit safely in 18 of the last 21 games
- Indiana added two more runs in the second inning on a triple and a fielding error.
- The Buckeyes cut into the lead again in the second inning, with a two-run homer courtesy of Morgan Frye that scored Reagan Milliken. Frye has reached base safely in the last 14 games.
- A triple and an error gave the Hoosiers two more runs in the third inning, making the score 7-3 in Indiana's favor.
- Continuing the back and forth, an RBI double from Jasmyn Burns scored Sami Bewick to put the Buckeyes back within three in the third inning. The double was Burns' 50th hit of the season.
- Copeland struck again in the fourth inning with her second solo home run of the night, putting Indiana up 8-4. Later in the inning, a bases-clearing double off the bat of Kinsey Mitchell and a fielding error made the score 12-4 in Indiana's favor.
- The Buckeyes plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Milliken RBI single and an RBI double in the gap from Skylar Limon. Milliken now has a team-best 55 RBI, recording at least one in 25 of the 37 games played. Her RBI today ties her with UCLA's Jordan Woolery for tops in the Big Ten.
- The seventh inning saw Briana Copeland's third home run of the contest to put the Hoosiers up by their winning score, 13-7.
- Lorin Boutté got the start for the Buckeyes. She went 1.2 innings in the contest, allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
- Kennedy Kay also got two innings of work and Layna Gerhard finished the game with 3.1 innings pitched.
Buckeye This and That
- Despite the loss, the Buckeyes sent two home runs out of Buckeye Field to bring their season total to a nations-leading 89.
- Entering competition today, each everyday Buckeye starter held a batting average of .335 and above, good for a team average of .361.
- During the recent 11-game winning streak, Ohio State compiled 125 hits, which is 41 percent of this season's hits in just 11 games.
- The offense also leads the Big Ten in home runs, doubles, hits, RBI, slugging percentage, and walks.
- Monday's nights game concluded the month of March for the Buckeyes that saw them play 16 of their 22 games at home. Ohio State went 18-4 in March and enters April having won 11 of its last 12 games.
