
Buckeyes Head to Carlsbad for NCAA Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will be one of 30 teams to compete at this year NCAA Championship when action gets underway this Friday, May 24, at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. There will be a cut to the low 15 teams and top 30 individuals following Sunday’s third round. After Monday’s final round, an individual champion will be crowned, and the low 8 teams will advance to match to determine a team champion.
Golf Channel will have live coverage beginning with Monday’s final round of stroke play and throughout the next two days of match play.
- Ohio State’s lineup will consist of Neal Shipley, Jackson Chandler, Maxwell Moldovan, Adam Wallin and Tyler Sabo. Jack Vojtko will be the alternate this week.
- Ohio State finished fourth at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional last week to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship. Neal Shipley led the way with a nine-place finish at even-par.
- This is the third consecutive season in which Ohio State has advanced to the NCAA Championship. The last time Ohio State went to the NCAA Championship in three consecutive years was over 30 years ago in 1991, 1992 and 1993.
- Last year, the Buckeyes made the cut for the final round in a dramatic playoff and finished 15th as a team.
- Ohio State has played head-to-head in the same field as 23 of the 29 teams in the championship field this season.
- Overall, this will be the 49th NCAA Championship appearance for Ohio State. The Buckeyes won the national title in 1945 and 1979 and have five individual champions, including Jack Nicklaus in 1961 and Clark Burroughs in 1985.
- The last time Ohio State was in California for an event was in January when they won the Southwestern Invitational behind Neal Shipley’s first collegiate victory.
- This will be the final career tournament for Shipley, Moldovan, Wallin and Chandler.
- Shipley is coming off a ninth-place finish at the Baton Rouge Regional. That was his sixth top 10 of the season. He had a total of five top 10s in his previous four collegiate seasons. Shipley leads the team with a career-best 71.06 scoring average. Last year, he finished 29th at the NCAA Championship.
- Moldovan will be putting a cap on a record-setting Ohio State career this week. This will be his 45th career tournament and he has a career average of 71.14. This season, he has five top 20 finishes and 10 rounds in the 60s.
- Wallin is tied with Shipley for the team lead with 20 rounds at par or better this year. He is averaging a career-best 71.73 and all but 2.5 of his 33 rounds have counted towards the team score. He has six top 20 finishes on the year, including in each of the last three events.
- Chandler has played well over the last three events. He had a tough start to the Baton Rouge Regional with rounds of 75 and 76 but finished with a 3-under 69 to help the Buckeyes advance to the NCAA Championship. He has a pair of top 10s, including a runner-up finish at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate last month.
- Sabo came through with a clutch round of 71 in the final round of the Baton Rouge Regional to help the Buckeyes advance. He has played in seven events on the year, including as a member of the scoring five. Eight of his nine rounds have counted towards the team score. He is averaging 74.68 with seven rounds at par or better.
