CARLSBAD, Calif. – Behind a round of 2-under 70 from Neal Shipley, Ohio State posted another solid round on day two of the NCAA Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
For the second consecutive day, the Buckeyes carded a 294 and that has them in a tie for sixth in the 30-team field at 12-over par.
“Playing in the afternoon, it's definitely more challenging on this golf course when it gets a little firmer and the wind picks up. I thought we hung in there pretty well and made some really tough pars on the stretch of 7-8-9 and I thought that really gave us a lift,” said head coach Jay Moseley. “I couldn’t be more proud of how we were ready for that stretch and then I thought we finished the day well. We’ve put ourselves in good shape headed into the final two rounds.”
Shipley opened with a tough round of 77 on Friday but bounced back in a big way on Saturday. He made three birdies and just one bogey in his round. That included a birdie on the tough par-3 16th and a closing birdie at No. 18. There were just three birdies all day on No. 16. Shipley jumped 70 spots on the leaderboard and is tied for 27th at 3-over par.
Adam Wallin had a 4-under 68 and was in second place at the start of the round. He posted a solid round of 2-over 74 and remains in a tie for second at 2-under par.
Redshirt-freshman Tyler Sabo made three birdies on the back nine, including a nice up-and-down on No. 18 for birdie and would card a 2-over 74. He has made seven birdies through the first two rounds as 10 birdies leads the field. He is tied for 54th at 6-over par.
Jackson Chandler is a shot behind Sabo at 7-over par following his second round of 4-over 76. Maxwell Moldovan is a shot behind Chandler at 8-over as he carded a 77 on Saturday.
The Buckeyes will be paired with No. 1 seed Auburn and No. 3 seed North Carolina for the third round on Sunday morning, beginning at 10:02 a.m. ET off the tenth tee.
There will be a cut following the round on Sunday to the low 15 teams and then the top 8 teams at the end of Monday’s round will advance to match play.
