Buckeyes 7th After Day 1 of NCAA Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Senior Adam Wallin made six birdies and fired a 4-under 68 to lead Ohio State in the opening round of the NCAA Championship at the Omni LaCosta Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
As a team, the Buckeyes carded a round of 6-over 294, which was the low round of the morning wave, and has the team in seventh place in the 30-team field heading into the second round.
“From what I could tell, we hit a lot of quality tee shots and approaches into the greens,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “You have to hit fairways and greens out here, and it’s a good test. Obviously, no one has really seen it (the golf course) and no one knows what to expect here, I thought we adjusted pretty well. You go out on the back nine and you’re playing into the wind on almost all the holes, then you come back downwind. We have a couple of things we could have cleaned up coming in, but I’m really proud of the way the guys played the par-fives. We had great scoring on the par-fives today. Overall, I thought our guys handled themselves very well.”
Wallin carded one of just 12 under-par rounds on the day where the average score was 75.84. It was his first round in the 60s since a final round 66 at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at the end of March. He made six birdies and just two bogeys on Friday.
Maxwell Moldovan and Jackson Chandler each opened with rounds of 3-over 75 and are tied for 63rd. Moldovan made 15 pars in his round which was tied for the most on the day. Chandler played his final 10 holes at even par.
Redshirt-freshman Tyler Sabo, playing in his first NCAA Championship, opened with a round of 4-over 76. Graduate Neal Shipley rounded out the Buckeye five on Friday with a 77.
The Buckeyes will again be paired with Baylor and Notre Dame in the second round on Saturday. The grouping will start off the first team with the first beginning at 3:55 p.m. ET. Golfstat.com will have live scoring throughout the length of the championship.
