CARLSBAD, Calif. – Ohio State senior Adam Wallin fired a 3-under 69 and holds the 54-hole lead at the NCAA Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
Wallin made five birdies and just two bogeys in his round on Sunday. He is 5-under par for the tournament and holds a two-shot lead over Virginia’s Ben James and Stanford’s Karl Vilips.
“I had a really solid day,” said Wallin. “I don’t know exactly how many greens I hit, I think like 16 or something, which was really solid. I never made any mistakes, just strung together a good round of golf.”
The last Buckeye to win an NCAA Championship was Clark Burroughs in 1985. He is one of five OSU individual champions, including Jack Nicklaus in 1961.
As a team, the Buckeyes shot their best round of the week, a 1-over 289, and are in fifth place. The top 8 teams following Monday’s final round will advance to match play to determine a team champion. The Buckeyes are eight shots clear of Arizona and Georgia Tech in ninth place.
So far this week, the Buckeyes have played great team golf. All five players have contributed a great round at some point over the first three days. Perhaps an encouraging sign for head coach Jay Moseley, is that they have yet to all play well on the same day.
A prime example is the third round of senior Jackson Chandler. After opening with rounds of 75-76, he hit the first 11 greens on Sunday and was 5-under par. He made a couple of bogeys coming home but would still post a 2-under 70.
Maxwell Moldovan also had his best round of the week on Sunday, carding a 2-over 74. Neal Shipley made three birdies in his third round of 76 while Tyer Sabo finished with an 83. For Sabo, his Sunday round wasn’t his best, but the beauty of team golf is that tomorrow is another day. At the Baton Rouge Regional, he carded an 83 in the second round but rebounded with a 71 in the final round to secure the Buckeyes’ spot in the championship.
Ohio State will be paired with Florida State and North Carolina for Monday’s final round and will start off the first tee at 2:40 p.m. ET. Golf Channel will have coverage of the final round from 6-10 p.m. ET.
