Buckeyes Fall in Overtime to No. 5 Johns Hopkins

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sixty minutes was not enough time to determine the victor in Sunday night's matchup between the Ohio State men's lacrosse team and No. 5 Johns Hopkins. In its fourth game in five weeks against a top-10 team, the Buckeyes (6-7, 1-3 B1G) ultimately fell 11-10 in overtime to the Blue Jays (9-3, 4-0 B1G) at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.
"We poured everything out there tonight," Ohio State head coach Nick Myers said. "I couldn't be prouder of these men and the fight that they showed start to finish on the ground and in all three phases of the game."
Ohio State started strong, holding Johns Hopkins without a goal for the first 17:12 of the game and scoring three times in the first 10 minutes. It was just the third time this season the Blue Jays were held scoreless in the opening quarter. Ed Shean gave the Buckeyes the 1-0 lead at 8:56 and was followed by Thomas Greenblatt (8:09) and Jack McKenna (5:42).
Ohio State's grew its lead to as many as five goals in the second quarter, but both teams finished the frame with four goals and the Buckeyes took a 7-4 advantage to the locker room at the half.
The teams were even again in the third quarter, scoring two goals apiece to keep the Buckeyes with a three-goal lead entering the fourth quarter. Johns Hopkins' final tally of the third started a five-goal scoring run for the team and it went on to tie the game at 8:39 in the fourth and take a 10-9 lead over Ohio State with 6:43 on the clock.
Over the next five minutes, Ohio State's defense showed its strength as it killed off a holding penalty and forced Johns Hopkins to commit three turnovers. The Blue Jays took an interference penalty to put the Buckeyes on the extra man opportunity with 1:37 to play in the game.
It was Alex Marinier, the Buckeyes' leading scorer on the year, who capitalized on the man-advantage to tie the game at 10-10 with 1:25 to play in the fourth quarter and send the game to overtime. The goal gave Marinier his third hat trick of the season and second in Big Ten play this year.
With 24 seconds left in extra time, Johns Hopkins' Matt Collison scored to give the Blue Jays the 11-10 win. The game was the Buckeyes' first to go to overtime this year.
Ohio State's freshman goalie Caleb Fyock finished the night with 11 saves, including two in the final minute of overtime, for his fifth straight game with double digit stops. The team caused 11 turnovers on the day with Greg Langermeier and Jonny Cool recording two each. Ohio State has now recorded 118 caused turnovers this year, its most in a since season since 2011.
Prior to the game, Ohio State honored its 2024 senior class of Danny Brady, Kurt Bruun, Tommy Burke, Connor Cmiel, Trent DiCicco, Eli Fisher, Brett Gladstone, Thomas Greenblatt, Marcus Hudgins, Langermeier, Kyle Lewis, Noah Mendoza, Mitchell Sandberg, Justin Sherrer and Jacob Snyder.
