STATE COLLEGE Pa. – Despite an early lead, the Ohio State baseball team (20-20, 3-12 Big Ten) was defeated by Penn State (23-13, 5-7 Big Ten), 15-3, in the teams’ series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Game Recap
- Tyler Pettorini had the first hit of the game for the Buckeyes with a lead-off infield single in the top of the second inning. Nick Erwin walked to put two runners on base for Ohio State with two outs on the board and both runners advanced on a wild pitch to get into scoring position. Pettorini and Erwin were both stranded on base, however, as the Nittany Lions secured the final out of the inning.
- Trey Lipsey tripled to lead off the third inning for the Buckeyes and then scored on a wild pitch to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead over Penn State. Kade Kern and Marcus Ernst drew back-to-back walks and then executed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position. Kern crossed home on a wild pitch to put Ohio State up by two, 2-0. An RBI single from Henry Kaczmar extended the Buckeye lead, 3-0.
- In the bottom of the third, the Nittany Lions scored twice to cut the Ohio State lead to one, 3-2, and Penn State blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 10 runs to take a 12-3 lead over the Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-run lead, 14-3.
- Erwin led off with a single to left field in the top of the sixth frame. McAlister reached on a fielder’s choice followed by a single from Lipsey, but there was nothing else doing for the Buckeyes in the top half of the sixth.
- Penn State scored again in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead, 15-3.
- In the top of the seventh with one out on the board, Pettorini was walked. Cole Andrews and Kaczmar hit back-to-back singles to load the bases for the Buckeyes but all three were left on base.
- With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, pinch hitter Hank Thomas was walked and then stole second. The Buckeyes, however, were not able to capitalize.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Andrews was walked and Kaczmar singled through the left side with just one out, but the Nittany Lions got the next two outs to sweep the season series.
