
Buckeyes Split Home-and-Home Series Against Kent State

KENT, Ohio – After defeating Kent State at home on April 4, the Ohio State baseball team (20-21) fell to the Golden Flashes (28-12), 10-5, at their place on Wednesday to close out the season’s home-and-home series.
Game Recap
- With one out, Kade Kern was walked. Marcus Ernst was next up; he singled through the right side and Kern advanced to third. An RBI single from Matthew Graveline scored Kern and gave Ohio State an early 1-0 lead. Ernst and Graveline both advanced on a wild pitch and Ernst had time to score on the next play to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead.
- The Golden Flashes took the lead, 6-2, in the bottom of the second inning.
- Josh Timmerman took over on the mound in the bottom of the third and he was dealing; he struck out the side to quickly get out of the inning.
- Cole Andrews drew a walk to lead off the fourth and Henry Kaczmar singled up the middle to put two runners on for the Buckeyes. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a passed ball. The bases were loaded after Mitchell Okuley was walked. A single up the middle from Trey Lipsey plated two runs and left Ohio State trailing by just two runs, 6-4.
- In the top of the fifth, Graveline and Tyler Pettorini both had singles. Graveline moved to third on Pettorini’s hit and Pettorini stole second to put two runners in scoring position, but they were stranded on base.
- The Golden Flashes got one across in the bottom of the sixth to take a three-run lead, 7-4.
- Pettorini singled up the middle to lead off the eighth inning and he advanced to second on a balk. Kaczmar then singled through the right side, sending Pettorinu home to cut the Kent State lead back to two, 7-5.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Kent State got ahead by five, 10-5, after scoring three times.
- With two outs in the board in the top of the ninth, Graveline was walked. The next Buckeye, however, was retired and the Golden Flashes came away with the win.
Buckeyes by the Numbers
- Kaczmar led the Buckeyes with three hits. Graveline and Pettorini each added two hits.
- Lipsey had a team-high two RBIs.
- Jaylen Jones (0-1) took the loss on the mound. In 1.2 innings pitched, he struck out two and allowed six earned runs on two hits.
- Timmerman had a phenomenal outing out of the bullpen. He fanned six and gave up just two hits in 2.1 scoreless innings.
Up Next
- The Buckeyes return to Bill Davis Stadium to host Illinois for a three-game series April 28-30. Following Friday’s game, there will be fireworks, and Saturday is the Bark in the Park game.
