
Buckeyes Win Back-and-Forth Contest Against RedHawks

OXFORD, Ohio – In a back-and-forth game, the Buckeyes (19-17) came out on top, defeating the Miami (OH) RedHawks (11-28), 12-11.
Game Recap
- Ohio State got on the board first, in the top of the first inning. Trey Lipsey led off and reached base after being hit by a pitch. He then stole second and advanced to third on a fly out from Kade Kern. A single up the middle from Matthew Graveline scored Lipsey and gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.
- An RBI single from the RedHawks in the bottom of the second tied things up, 1-1.
- Tyler Pettorini singled to lead off the third inning for the Buckeyes. Graveline was hit by a pitch to get on base and both runners advanced on a wild pitch to get in scoring position. A single from Henry Kaczmar drove in two runs and put Ohio State back in the lead, 3-1.
- The RedHawks, however, claimed the lead in the bottom of the third, 7-3, after an RBI single, a grand slam and an RBI double.
- The Buckeyes, however, didn’t stay down for long. Kern drew a walk to lead off the fourth frame; he advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third. A single from Marcus Ernst sent Kern home and put Ohio State within three, 7-4. The bases were soon loaded for the Buckeyes and Josh McAlister was walked to plate a run and leave the Buckeyes trailing by just two, 7-5. Mitchell Okuley was next up to bat; he singled to right field, sending two runs home to tie the score, 7-7. A single off the bat of Lipsey also plated two runs and put Ohio State back in the lead, 9-7.
- The RedHawks scored once in the bottom of the fifth inning to come within one run of the Ohio State lead, 9-8.
- In the top of the seventh, Kern hit a lead-off double. Pettorini and Graveline were both walked to load the bases. After the RedHawks changed pitchers, Ernst was up to bat; he singled up the middle to drive in two runs and extend the Buckeyes’ lead, 11-8.
- Miami scored once in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Ohio State lead to two, 11-9.
- McAlister singled to right field to kick things off in the eighth and advanced to second base, and then to third, on a wild pitch. A sac fly from Lipsey score McAlister and put the Buckeyes up by three, 12-9.
- The RedHawks scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to come within one run of Ohio State, 12-11.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Miami went down in order, with two of the outs coming on strikeouts from Landon Beidelschies to clinch the win for the Buckeyes.
Buckeyes by the Numbers
- Lipsey, Kern and Ernst led the Buckeye with two hits each.
- Ernst and Lipsey each recorded three RBIs.
- Josh Timmerman struck out four in 2.2 innings pitched. He gave up seven runs on six hits in the no-decision.
- Jake Johnson (1-0) earned the win. He struck out one and allowed two hits in a two-thirds of an inning pitched.
- Nolan Clegg fanned three and Wyatt Loncar fanned four in appearances out of the bullpen.
- Beidelschies earned his fifth save of the season. He struck out three in 1.1 hitless, scoreless innings tossed.
