Buckeyes End Weekend on a High Note, Defeat Terps in Series Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes (18-17, 3-9 Big Ten) closed out their series against Maryland (21-14, 16-3 Big Ten) with a 13-8 victory on Sunday.
Game Recap
- The Buckeyes struck first in the series finale. Matthew Graveline was walked and then stole second. Tyler Pettorini was next at the plate; he doubled down the left field line to score Graveline and give Ohio State the early 1-0 lead.
- Pettorini singled to lead-off the fourth for the Buckeyes. Marcus Ernst was walked and both he and Pettorini advanced bases on a passed ball. Nick Erwin was then walked to load the bases. Mitchell Okuley and Josh McAlister drew back-to-back walks, extending the Ohio State lead, 3-0. An RBI single from Trey Lipsey scored Erwin. Okuley scored on a balk and McAlister scored on a sac fly from Henry Kaczmar to extend the Buckeye lead to six, 6-0. In his second at-bat of the inning, Pettorini came up by big, blasting one of the park to drive in three runs and give Ohio State a 9-0 lead over the Terrapins.
- Ernst doubled to right center to kick off the bottom of the fifth frame and advanced to third on a groundout. McAlister stepped into the batter’s box, sailing one out of the park to give the Buckeyes a commanding 11-0 lead over Maryland.
- The Terrapins scored twice in the top of the sixth, but Ohio State still had a dominant lead, 11-2.
- An RBI double from Ernst in the bottom of the sixth put the Buckeyes back ahead by double figures, 12-2.
- Maryland scored three runs in the seventh to cut the Ohio State lead to seven, 12-5.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Okuley hit a lead-off homerun to extend the Ohio State lead, 13-5.
- A three-run homerun from the Terps in the top of the eighth put them within five runs of the Buckeyes, 13-8.
- Nolan Clegg came out to the mound for the ninth inning and shut the Terps down; he fanned two of three faced as Maryland went down in order to secure the win for Ohio State.
Buckeyes by the Numbers
- Pettorini led the Buckeyes with a career-high four hits; he was just a triple shy of the cycle. He also led the team in RBIs with four.
- Ernst added two hits for Ohio State.
- McAlister batted in three runs and Okuley batted in two.
- George Eisenhardt (2-2) earned the win on the mound. He fanned four and gave up just two runs on one hit in 3.1 innings pitched.
- Blayne Robinson got the nod on the bump for the first time in his career. He tossed 2.0 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits.
