Basics on the Buckeyes
- Aided by their win last Friday at No. 1 and previously unbeaten Iowa, Ohio State was the biggest mover in this week's NFHCA poll. The Buckeyes are up to No. 7Â and have their highest national ranking since reaching No. 5 in 2010.
- With an 11-2 overall record, the Buckeyes are also off to their best 13-game start since 2006. The team would go on to win the Big Ten regular season title and advance to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
- Much of Ohio State's success this season has been on the offensive end of the field, led by the scoring of Makenna Webster, who is second in the Big Ten in both goals (14) and total points (34). She has at least one goal in 10 of 13 games.
- Newcomer Brenna Bough, a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, has 18 points on eight goals and two assists. Last week, her third-quarter goal at Iowa was the game-winner.
- The Buckeyes have also proven to be a good defensive team. They're allowing just 1.23 goals per game and on Sunday registered their third shutout of the season at Indiana.
- The backline consists of fifth-year senior Delaney Lawler, a veteran of 78 career games, senior Sarah Richards, who will play in her 50th career game on Friday, and sophomore Katie Fichtner.
- Senior goalie Abby Danson has started 46 career games with 31 wins, 178 saves and this season has a 1.18 goals-against average.
Scouting Penn State
- Penn State, which is ranked No. 16 in this week's NFHCA poll, is 5-5 on the season following Sunday's 4-2 loss at No. 6 Maryland.
- The Nittany Lions are 0-2 in Big Ten play, having also dropped their conference opener on Sept. 15 to Rutgers, 1-0.
- The duo of Sophia Gladieux and Mackenzie Allessie have 38 points and have scored 17 of Penn State's 25 goals this season.
- Goalkeeper Brie Barraco has a .761 save percentage and is allowing an average of 1.71 goals per game. Last season, she earned All-America honors while helping the Nittany Lions reach the NCAA Final Four.
Scouting Kent State
- Kent State is 3-7 on the season and plays at Appalachian State on Friday before returning home to host the Buckeyes on Sunday.
- The Golden Flashes' three wins have come against Ball State, Central Michigan and Michigan State.
- Eva Usoz is Kent State's leading scorer with 12 points (six goals). She followed by Emma Rolston (eight points) and Iris Bekker (seven points).
Statistically Speaking
- Goalkeeper Abby Danson's 31 career wins ranks No. 4 all-time in program history since 1994. The only players with more are Lindsay Quintiliani (40), Ally Tunitis (37) and Lindsay Williams (36).
- Additionally, her 1.61 career goals-against average is also tied for fourth. Ally Tunitis holds the record at 1.40 from 2006-09.
- Both Delany Lawler and Leanne Bough are moving up the list of career games played. Heading into this weekend, Lawler's played in all 83 of her career games, which is the third-most in program history. Bough has played in 81 career games, which is tied for sixth most.
- The program record for games played is 90, which was set last season by Emma Goldean. She also holds the record with 87 career games started.
- Brenna's Bough 18 points are the most by an Ohio State freshman since Maddy Humphrey had 32 in her rookie season of 2014 and was All-Region honoree.
- Ohio State's offense is currently on pace to challenge the single-season school records for goals scored (71 in 2010) and goals per game average (3.47 in 2006). The 2023 Buckeyes have 45 goals in 13 games, good for an average of 3.46.
