Buckeyes will look to rebound Sunday at Kent State
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The seventh-ranked Ohio State field hockey team saw a three-game winning streak snapped on Friday afternoon as No. 16 Penn State came away with a 2-1 victory in State College, Pa. The Buckeyes are 11-3 on the season and 4-2 in Big Ten play with Penn State improved to 6-5 and picked up their first conference win.
The Short Story
Penn State broke a scoreless tie late in the third quarter and then got a critical insurance goal midway through the fourth quarter to build a 2-0 lead. Ohio State's Makenna Webster scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season with under six minutes to play, but PSU was able to snuff out any potential game-tying Ohio State goal.
Senior goalie Abby Danson made four saves and Leanne Bough added a defensive save in the final minute of play. The Buckeyes outshot Penn State 14-10 but the Nittany Lions had a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.
How The Goals Were Scored
- After generating 10 of the game's first 11 shots, Ohio State found itself behind 1-0 late in the third quarter as Penn State's Sophia Gladieux scored off a Mackenzie Allessie assist at the 41:55 mark. It was Gladieux's team-leading 13th goal of the season.
- The Gladieux-Allessie combo teamed on Penn State's second goal of the game – coming with 8:02 remaining in the fourth quarter – as Allessie scored off an assists from Gladieux.
- Makenna Webster cut the PSU lead in half two minutes later, however, as she cleaned up a rebound off the pads of Nittany Lion goalie Brie Barraco. That's as close as Ohio State would get, however, as Penn State's defense tightened the rest of the way.
Buckeye This and That
- Friday's game was Ohio State's fifth this season against a ranked opponent. The Buckeyes have two more ranked teams left on their regular season schedule: vs. No. 6 Rutgers (Friday, Oct. 13) and vs. No. 9 Maryland (Sunday, Oct. 15).
- Webster has scored at least one goal in 11 of 14 games this season. Her 36 points is second-most in the Big Ten.
- Today's game was only the second time this season that an opponent finished with more penalty corners than Ohio State. For the season, the Buckeyes have a 128-66 edge over their opponents in that category.
- Today's game was the third in a four-game road trip. Ohio State is 5-2 away from home this season with one more regular season road game remaining: at Kent State on Sunday.
- Ohio State held Penn State without a shot or a penalty corner in the opening quarter. The defensive effort was keyed by goalie Abby Danson and defenders Delaney Lawler, Katie Fichtner and Sarah Richards.
- Friday's contest was also the 60th all-time in the series history between Ohio State and Penn State.
What's Next
Ohio State heads to Kent, Ohio for a non-conference game on Sunday against Kent State beginning at 1 p.m. The Golden Flashes are 3-7 on the season and host Appalachian State on Friday.
