COLUMBUS, Ohio – Baseball season is upon us as Ohio State opens the year against Illinois this weekend in Greenville, S.C. The teams will play a four-game series at Fluor Field with single games on Friday and Sunday and a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch for the opener is set for 3 p.m.

- The Buckeyes come into the season with a veteran group both on the mound and in the field.
- Ohio State was picked third in the Big Ten Preseason Poll by the league’s head coaches.
- The Buckeyes are the defending Big Ten Tournament Champions (it wasn’t played last season) and will remain the defending champs for another year. The Big Ten coaches elected for no Big Ten Tournament this season.
- Ohio State has made the regionals in three of the last four seasons.
- Last season, the Buckeyes were 6-8 prior to the shutdown.
- Illinois was 8-5 in the abbreviated 2020 season. The Buckeyes lead the all-time series with Illinois 106-103-2. The teams haven’t played since 2018 and split the last two three-game series in 2016 and 2018.
- The Buckeyes return all three weekend starters from the last two years in juniors Garrett Burhenn, Seth Lonsway and senior Griffan Smith.
- Lonsway was named to the Golden Spikes Preseason Watch List. The award annually goes to the best amateur player in the country each year.
- Burhenn, Lonsway and TJ Brock were all named to the Big Ten preseason honors list. Burhenn and Lonsway will be at the top of the Buckeye rotation this season and Brock will be one of the anchors at the backend of the bullpen.
