COLUMBUS, Ohio – In 2021, playing four baseball games inside one of the newest football facilities in the country shouldn’t come as a surprise and that’s just what Ohio State will do this weekend. The Buckeyes head to Minneapolis, Minn., for four games — two against Iowa and two against Nebraska — inside US Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings. Ohio State will play two games Friday and then one each on Saturday and Sunday.
The Opponents
- Iowa opened the season against Big Ten preseason favorite Michigan in Round Rock, Texas and dropped three of four games. Iowa’s lone victory came in the seven-inning contest on March 7.
- Nebraska won three of its four games with Purdue last weekend in Round Rock. After a 6-5 walk-off loss in the opener, Nebraska outscored Purdue 21-2 over the final three games of the series.
Good Opening Weekend
- The Buckeyes took three of four from Illinois in Greenville to start the season.
- Not sure if it was a good omen or not, but the first two games of the season each went to extra innings and the Buckeyes won them both.
- That was the first time Ohio State went extra innings on opening day since 2013 and it was the first time the Buckeyes won back-to-back games via extra innings since 2015.
- Freshman Kade Kern made quite the debut, going 5-for-6 with a double, triple and three singles in his first collegiate game. He hit .471 on the weekend with a pair of doubles and five RBI. He also had a team-high 10 putouts in the outfield over the four games.
- On the middle day of the series, the Buckeyes swept a double-header with Illinois. That was remarkable given the fact its two starting pitchers combined to go just 6.2 innings and allowed nine runs.
Ohio State Quick Hitters
- The Buckeyes batted .267 as a team and scored 24 runs (6.0 per game) in the first four games of season.
- Senior captain Conner Pohl is batting .353 and has reached base in each of his last 16 games dating back to last season. He is also riding a team-high nine-game hitting streak.
- The OSU bullpen has a 1.66 ERA in 21.2 innings with 29 strikeouts and just nine walks.
- Wyatt Loncar pitched four scoreless innings in relief last weekend with four strikeouts and no walks.
- Three Buckeye freshmen saw action on opening weekend, and all performed well. Kade Kern hit .471 with two doubles, a triple and five runs batted in. Nate Haberthier and Isaiah Coupet combined for 5.2 innings out of the pen, allowing just one earned run and striking out six.
- Ohio State pitchers have stranded 42 runners on base through the first four games
