Lonsway Named to Golden Spikes Preseason Watch List

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State redshirt-junior Seth Lonsway has been named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List. The award is given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country.
Lonsway joins a prestigious list as he’s just the third Buckeye to be named to the preseason watch list since 2008, joining Alex Wimmers in 2010 and Josh Desze who was on the list in 2012 and 2013.
The Celina, Ohio native has made 21 starts and has logged 110.1 innings over his first two seasons as a Buckeye. He is 9-6 with a 3.59 ERA and has struck 168 batters.
Lonsway earned Freshman All-American honors 2019 as he led the Big Ten and all DI freshmen with 126 strikeouts in 92.1 innings. He limited opponents to a .214 batting average and picked up a win as the Buckeyes’ Opening Day starter in his collegiate debut.
Last season, he looked poised for another tremendous year as he led the nation with 21.00 strikeouts per nine innings while ranking second in the Big Ten and 10th nationally in total strikeouts. Opponents hit just .175 against him and he struck out double-digit batters in three of his four starts.
The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will maintain a rolling list of players throughout the year and announce a midseason watch list in April, the semifinalists in early June, finalists in late June and the winner in July.
Lonsway and the Buckeyes will open the season on Friday, March 5 against Illinois. The four-game series with the Illini will be played in Greenville, S.C.
