COLUMBUS, Ohio — No. 14 Ohio State suffered its first loss of the season to No. 11 University of Virginia, 2-1, on Sunday in a hard-fought contest in Charlottesville, Va.
The Buckeyes were able to create opportunities in the first quarter, with three shot attempts. However, Ohio State was outshot by Virginia in the second quarter 13-4. UVA was awarded twice as many corners, but was unable to capitalize.
Senior Ester Clotet Alsina created an opportunity off of a penalty corner and scored the first goal of the game early in the third quarter with an assist by Mackenzie Allessie. Three of Ohio State’s four shots were on goal in the third quarter.
The Cavaliers generated more scoring opportunities in the final quarter of the game, however, scoring two goals to top the Buckeyes, 2-1. The final goal came in the 57th minute, and Ohio State attempted to create an offensive advantage but was unable to craft any shot opportunities in the final three minutes.
Five Buckeyes took shot attempts in the game: senior Whitney Harris, freshman Leanne Bough, junior Nikki Trzaska, Allessie and Clotet Alsina. Those five players are responsible for 11 of the 14 total goals secured so far this season.
Virginia took 31 shots throughout the game and goalie Aaliyah Hernandez was up to the task, making 15 saves. She now totals 23 saves in the first four games after stopping 60 shots last season.

QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH JARRED MARTIN
“Exciting game against a strong UVA team. The intensity was high and both teams competed hard. Credit to UVA for the win and their ability to sustain throughout. The difference was their execution down the stretch in a competitive game where both teams played hard.
I liked the way we started and saw some good things in our passing game. As the game went on, we lost some structure and UVA was able to take advantage. It’s always tough being up going in to the last quarter and losing in the last few minutes but we need to be smarter. We are a young group, and showed some great things in times of pressure. Certain people really stepped up. We will get back out there on Tuesday and prepare for Central Michigan and Louisville next weekend at home.”
