Gray Beats Scarlet, 8-4, in Game One of S&G Series Tuesday Night

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team opened its annual Scarlet & Gray Series Tuesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium with Gray defeating Scarlet, 8-4, in seven innings.
Scarlet jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Nick Erwin launched a two-run homer over the wall in left in the bottom of the second. The Gray squad answered right back in the top of the third on a two-out RBI single by Nate Romans, scoring Ridge Winand and Marcus Ernst. Noah West then made it a 3-2 lead for Gray on a two-out RBI single to push Dominic Canzone around. In the bottom of the fourth, Matt Carpenter cut Scarlet’s deficit to a one-run game with a RBI ground out.
Gray scored four times in the top of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. After a walk to Scottie Seymour and double by Winand, two wild pitches made it a three-run contest. With the bases loaded, a RBI single by Brent Todys scored Ernst before a passed ball allowed Foppe to cross the dish.
Erwin went 1-for-2 with two RBI, while Romans was 2-for-4 with two RBI and West was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Nolan Clegg was 2-for-3 at the plate. Scarlet starting pitcher Griffan Smith tossed three innings and allowed two runs on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Gray starting pitcher Jake Vance threw three innings on two runs, three hits, two walks and one strikeout. Gray reliever Joe Gahm tossed three innings and scattered one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Scarlet reliever Brady Cherry threw a scoreless inning of relief with one walk and two strikeouts.
Game two of the Gray series will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Bill Davis Stadium. Admission is free and fans will need to use Pay-N-Display machines for parking.
