Buckeyes Lead B1G with Three All-Region Selections – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three Buckeyes were selected to the 2016 Mideast-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Teams, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced Wednesday. Junior outfielder Ronnie Dawson and senior third baseman Nick Sergakis were named first team selections, while junior pitcher Tanner Tully earned second team laurels. The three regional honors by the Buckeyes were the most by a Big Ten school this spring.
This is Dawson’s sixth postseason honor this spring. He was taken in the second round of the MLD Draft last weekend by the Houston Astros. From Grove City, Ohio, Dawson was named a first team All-Big Ten and third team All-American by Louisville Slugger and Baseball America. Dawson led the Buckeyes to their first B1G tournament title in nine years and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. The junior outfielder batted .331 with a team-leading 13 home runs, 25 doubles and a career-high 55 runs scored, 51 RBI and 21 stolen bases. Dawson tied the single-season doubles recorder (25) held by former Buckeye great and Hall of Famer Dan Seimetz (1997) in his last at-bat of the 2016 campaign last Sunday. Earlier this season he became the first Buckeye ever to have at least 40 doubles, 20 home runs, and 40 stolen bases in a career. This is his first regional honor in his career.
Sergakis, from Columbus, Ohio, was a first team All-Big Ten and co-captain of the Big Ten champion Buckeyes. This is his first regional honor. Last weekend, Sergakis was one of six Buckeyes selected in the MLB draft. He was picked in the 23rd round by the New York Mets. Sergakis finished the 2016 season in the Top 10 in 10 different conference batting categories. His .332 batting average was the best on the team. Sergakis scored 48 runs with 18 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 47 RBI, 36 walks, 18 hit by pitches and went 15-for-17 in stolen bases. He tallied 23 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI performances. In three seasons in Columbus, Sergakis batted .303 with 107 runs scored, 171 hits, 35 doubles, three triples, 12 home runs, 84 RBI, 62 walks and 24 stolen bases. The OSU Sportsmanship Award Winner this spring, Sergakis received his degree in logistics management.
Tully, from Elkhart, Ind., earns his first career regional honor. Tully was drafted in the 26th round last weekend by the Cleveland Indians. In 2016, Tully finished was 8-3 with a 2.59 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 107.2 innings pitched and 16 starts. His 2.09 league ERA ranked fifth in the Big Ten. Tully has been on the most efficient pitchers in OSU history. He is third in the career record book in fewest walks allowed (45) and sixth in career ERA (2.93). In three seasons, Tully fanned 175 batters in 276.0 IP, which is 12th all-time in school history. A first team All-Big Ten selection, Tully was the 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the Year two seasons ago.
