COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team fell, 12-0, against Iowa on Alumni Day Saturday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes drop to 30-16-1 overall and 9-8 in Big Ten play, while the Hawkeyes improve to 22-22 and 8-9 in league play.
Iowa right-handed starter Tyler Peyton limited the Scarlet and Gray hitters to a pair of hits in seven scoreless innings with three strikeouts and two walks to improve to 2-5, while Ohio State senior left-handed starter John Havird drops to 5-2 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a one hour and 25 minute delay, The Hawkeyes jumped out to a 3-0 lead with four hits in the top of the first vs. Havird. Joel Booker swung on the first pitch he saw vs. Havird for a RBI liner down the left field line before back-to-back two out singles by Mason McCoy and John Barrett.
With two down and two in scoring position, the Hawkeyes pushed their lead to five when McCoy singled up the middle to plate one before a throwing error allowed a second Iowa runner to touch the dish. Iowa scored a sixth run in the sixth when after back-to-back walks by Woodby. The away squad tacked two runs in the eighth on two hits for the 8-0 advantage and four more runs in the ninth.
ON THE MOUND
Senior left-hander John Havird gave up six runs, five earned on 10 hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 5.2 innings. Austin Woodby replaced Havird with two down in the top of the sixth. He threw 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks. Joe Stoll threw the ninth and gave up four runs on five hits with one walk.
THE GOLDEN ERA OF BUCKEYE BASEBALL
Following the delay, the wait was finally over to recognize the Golden Era of Ohio State Baseball with the 50th anniversary of the 1966 National Championship Team. Twenty-nine members from the program’s first and only title team were in attendance as well as eight teammates from the 1965 NCAA runner-up team and six teammates from the 1967 B1G championship squad. The Buckeyes won three straight league titles and made three-consecutive College World Series appearances from 65-67. There’s been no era in Ohio State baseball like it. Led by coach Marty Karow, the 1966 Buckeyes are the only Big Ten school to win the College Baseball World Series.
CAPTAIN’S BREAKFAST
More than 20 Ohio State baseball captains were in attendance at the annual captain’s breakfast to kick off Alumni Day at Bill Davis Stadium. 1966 co-captain All-American catcher Chuck Brinkman handed out the captain’s mugs to senior infielder Nick Sergakis and junior catcher Jalen Washington at the conclusion of the breakfast. Beals added, “These two young men are the definition of Buckeye baseball. We are happy to have them as our 2016 captains.”
