COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team dropped a 7-4 contest in the series opener vs. Rutgers Friday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 21-12-1 and 2-5 in Big Ten play, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 16-17 overall and 3-4 in league action.
Junior left-hander Tanner Tully received the loss to drop to 4-3. The OSU junior lefty tossed 6.0 innings, surrendering seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits, while walking three and striking out two before giving way to freshman right-hander Ryan Feltner in the seventh. The OSU rookie tossed the final three innings and allowed no runs on three hits with a strikeout and walk. At the plate, Troy Montgomery homered, while Troy Kuhn went 2-for-4 with a RBI and triple. Jacob Bosiokovic had a 2-for-3 day with a walk and run scored and Nick Sergakis went 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBI, double and run scored.
Rutgers left-hander Howie Brey pitched a complete game, liming the OSU bats to four runs on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts to improve to 4-3.
Scott Daly, an active Navy Seal from 2002-13, threw out tonight’s first pitch as part of Military Appreciation Night at Bill Davis Stadium.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Rutgers came out swinging early in the count vs. Tully and tallied seven runs on nine hits in the first three frames of the series opener. A two-run single by Jawuan Harris and OSU error allowed emptied the bases in the top of the first. Tully fanned his second batter of the frame to retire the side.
Ohio State notched three runs in the bottom of the first after a two-run double in the gap in left center by Sergakis and RBI single down the left field line by Kuhn.
In the top of the second, the Scarlet Knights registered three straight hits vs. Tully. R.J. Devish had a RBI single, while Chris Susek doubled to right center to push the lead back to three runs. Rutgers notched a seventh run in the third when Milo Freeman singled through the left side to push the lead to four runs.
Ohio State cut its deficit to three in the bottom of the fifth when Montgomery slugged his seventh home run of the year over the wall in right vs. Brey. The Buckeyes went down in order vs. Brey in both the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Kuhn powered his first triple of the season to the gap in left center in the bottom of the eighth, but was left stranded after a hard liner to center was caught.

- Ohio State drops to 5-4 vs. Rutgers all-time. This was the first meeting between the two schools in Columbus.
- The Buckeyes’ eight-game home win streak was snapped tonight. Ohio State is now 12-2 at home in 2016.
- Sergakis notched his Big Ten-best 13th double of the year.
- Ohio State leads the Big Ten with 37 home runs. Montgomery picked up his seventh of the season. Montgomery has 13 home runs in his career.
- Bosiokovic recorded his ninth multi-hit game, while Kuhn had his eight multi-hit game. Sergakis leads the team with eight multi-RBI performances.
