COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball program has added three new recruits for the 2017 season, head coach Greg Beals announced Thursday. Two signees are Ohioans, while one is from Massachusetts; the three additions to the 2016 recruiting class bring in skills on the mound and around the infield.
“We are excited to announce these additions to our 2016 recruiting class of future Buckeyes,” Beals said. “We believe these guys help fill the needs of our program on an off the field.”
The 2016 class, now up to 12 new recruits for the 2017 season, adds Clay Surrell (INF/RHP, Lithopolis, Ohio), Joey Roddy (3B/1B, Hingham, Mass.) and Andrew Magno (LHP, Dublin, Ohio).

Surrell was a three-time All District and All-OCC honoree, earning first team honors and Dispatch All-Metro Team laurels in 2014 and 2015 … batted .430 as a junior with a home run and 17 RBI, while going 4-2 with a 1.28 ERA in 16 innings pitched on the hill … notched a 2.21 ERA with a 2-0 record as a sophomore, while posting a 4-0 mark with a 1.93 ERA as a freshman … son of Dan Surrell and Tiffany DeMarcus … plays high school baseball for coach Brian Thacker … plays summer ball for Midwest Marlins under coach Ryan Weaver … would like to major in physical therapy.
“I’ve always wanted to be a Buckeye and be a part of the tradition and earn a degree from the best university in the nation. It’s great to have the opportunity to compete in the Big Ten against top-level competition, and being close to home. I would like to thank God for guiding my path and blessing me with the ability to play this game. I would like to thank Coach Beals and the Ohio State coaching staff for giving me this opportunity. Also would like to thank my current and past coaches for helping me develop my game.”
Coach Beals on Surrell: “Clay is a very versatile player that we see helping us both in the infield and on the mound. A switch hitter with very good foot speed fits well in our offensive philosophy. On the mound, Clay is a great competitor with a quick arm. This type of athlete and versatility is extremely valuable in our program.”
Joey Roddy – 3B/1B – R/R – 6-4, 220
Hingham, Mass. – Boston College Prep
Roddy was ESPN Boston All-State, Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic and Catholic Conference All-Star … batted .383 with 22 runs scored, 23 RBI and one home run, while posting a 1.11 ERA with a 2-0 mark and one save on the mound during junior campaign … son of Karen and Bill Roddy … went to Boston College High School under coach Norm Walsh … plays summer ball for East Coast Grays under coach Chris Snusz and Jay Schnabel … would like to major in accounting.
“Ohio State was always a special place for me. My dad grew up a proud Buckeye fan. I am thrilled to attend one of the top academic institutions with incredible resources and history within athletics. I feel fortunate and blessed to have an opportunity to play with such a great group of guys motivated to do great things. I want to thank coach Beals and coach Holick for giving me this opportunity and believing in me. I also want to one of my best friends and mentor, Jay Schnabel, who worked tirelessly with me over the past six years. More important I want to thank my mother and father. My mom drove me everywhere to make this happen. It was endless and she never complained. My dad has always been there to support me. I am very blessed. I will be proud to wear the Scarlet and Gray.”
Coach Beals on Roddy: “Joey is a physical athlete with power potential in the bat. Joey has the athleticism and arm strength to play third base and his physical feature is also suited for first base. We are very excited about his future and working on developing his power into our lineup.”
Andrew Magno – LHP-5-11, 185
Dublin, Ohio – Dublin Scioto H.S.
Magno was a first team All-OCC, posting a 4-2 mark with a 2.82 ERA and 2.19 WHIP with 61 strikeouts to 49.1 innings pitched … son of Manny Magno and Liz Allen … plays high school baseball for coach Ken Carpenter … plays summer ball for Triple Crown Royals and coach David Lee and Dan and Josh Moss … would like major in business.
“Ohio State has great academics and it’s close to home for me. I’ll stay in good fellowship and it’s a dream come true to wear the Scarlet and Gray and play the game I love. I’m excited to get going.”
Coach Beals on Magno: “Andrew is a lefty pitcher with a quick arm and good feel for spinning a breaking ball. His ability to compete and throw a good breaking ball makes him a very valuable asset to our pitching staff.”
