ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team claimed a 6-3 win at Ohio Tuesday night at Wren Stadium in Athens, Ohio. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 15-7-1 overall, while the Bobcats fall to 10-14 in 2016.
“There were a lot of positives from today,” head coach Greg Beals said. “It was a great ball game. Give Ohio University credit, they played well. It was great to score in the first two innings and it gave Feltner a chance to settle in and pitch. He threw very well for us tonight. I thought our pitching staff did well throughout the entire ball game. We mixed and matched with our bullpen and I think we struck out seven of the last 11 batters we faced. Bosiokovic had another big hit and it was nice to see us manufacture two runs there in the ninth. I’m happy with our performance tonight on the road.”
Redshirt junior right fielder Jacob Bosiokovic launched his team-best seventh home run of the season, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and run scored, while freshman right-hander Ryan Feltner picked up his first collegiate win to improve to 1-1 in 2016. Redshirt sophomore right-hander Yianni Pavlopoulos tallied his sixth save of the year as well.
BUCKEYE SCORING PLAYS
Ohio State struck the board twice in the top of the first vs. Ohio starter Logan Jacik. With the bases loaded, a RBI by senior first baseman Troy Kuhn scored junior center fielder Troy Montgomery. Kuhn reached on a throwing error by the Bobcat third baseman. A sacrifice fly by junior co-captain Jalen Washington made it a two-run contest. In the second, Bosiokovic drilled his team-best seventh home run of the year off the netting over the wall in left center field. Senior shortstop Craig Nennig was aboard on the “Bosi blast” following a lead-off single. Ohio State got two key insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Freshman designated hitter Brady Cherry roped a double to right field to score Washington, who led off the inning with a single. Senior pinch hitter Ryan Leffel scored Cherry for the squad’s sixth run on a sac fly to center field.
HOW OHIO SCORED
The Bobcats scored a run in the sixth and a pair of runs in the seventh to cut the OSU advantage to one-run. A sac fly by Tony Giannini pushed one run home. In the seventh, a swinging strike three went in the dirt and skipped away from home plate to score a second Bobcat run. An OSU fielding error then followed allowing the third run to cross the dish.
FIRST CAREER WIN
A native of Hudson, Ohio, Feltner limited the Bobcat bats to one run, while scattering five hits with a walk and a strikeout in 5.2 innings of work to claim his first collegiate win. He left two OU runners on base in both the second and fifth stanzas, respectively.
SERGAKIS MAKIN’ PLAYS AT THE HOT CORNER
Senior co-captain third basemen Nick Sergakis made a catch look easy to end the fourth. On a pop-up in foul territory down the left field line, Sergakis slowed down by the side walling and made an over-the-shoulder basket catch to leave a runner on. In the bottom of the fifth, he made a tough back-hand play off a short-hop at the hot corner and fired a strike to first base to leave runners on the corners. To top it off, he extended his reached base streak to 23 straight games at the plate with a double in the top half of the fifth.
BULLPEN TALK
Sophomore right-hander Seth Kinker made his team-high 12th appearance of the year with two down in the bottom of the sixth. He allowed a walk but induced a pop-up to leave the Bobcats loaded. Senior left-handed reliever Daulton Mosbarger tossed 0.2 innings in the seventh and allowed two runs, one earned run, on one hit with a strikeout and one walk. Senior left-hander Michael Horejsei replaced Mosbarger with two down in the seventh and fanned two OU hitters. He finished with four strikeouts on no hits or runs in 1.1 innings. Pavlopoulos closed the door on the Bobcats with a 1-2-3 ninth. He struck out the side in a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the season. UP NEXT
