LAS VEGAS, Nev. – On a windy Friday night in Las Vegas, Nev., the Ohio State baseball team fell, 5-2, at UNLV in the series opener at Wilson Stadium. With the loss the Buckeyes fall to 6-5-1, while the Rebels improve to 6-6 in 2016.
Junior left-handed pitcher Tanner Tully received his first loss of the year (2-1), tossing six innings and allowed five runs, four earned, six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. UNLV right-handed starter D.J. Myers limited the OSU bats to two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in six innings of work to improve to 1-0.
HOW THE BUCKEYES SCORED
Ronnie Dawson scored the first run of the game on a RBI groundout by Nick Sergakis. Dawson reached third base on a dropped fly ball in center field and stolen base. Dawson cut the deficit to three runs in the top of the fifth when he launched a solo home run deep over the 375-foot sign in right center field.
REBELS’ BIG INNING
Down 1-0, UNLV answered with five runs on four hits vs. Tully in the fourth. Justin Jones doubled to center field with one down to tie it at 1-all. A RBI double down the left field line by Andrew Yazdanbakhsh made it 2-1 before a two-run double to the gap in left center pushed the lead to 4-1. A fielding error at first base pushed a fifth Rebel run around.
LEFT THEM LOADED THREE TIMES
Ohio State had three golden chances to put runs on the board, but left the bases loaded in the second, sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Myers fanned a hitter to end the second and got a double-play ball in the sixth. In the seventh, UNLV right-handed reliever Larry Quaney induced two pop-ups to strand all three OSU runners.
