COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior first baseman Bo Coolen hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as the Gray squad won, 4-3, in nine innings Saturday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, the fall series is now tied at 1-1. Game No. 3 is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bill Davis Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gray squad tied the game at 3-all in bottom of the sixth and both bats were kept off the board for the next two frames. Junior right-hander Seth Kinker tossed three-consecutive scoreless innings for Gray to set up the dramatic bottom of the ninth. Senior shortstop Jalen Washington worked a one-out walk and stole second base to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Coolen, from Honolulu, Hawaii, then drove in Washington with a hard-hit single through the right side. Washington beat the throw into home plate to end the game.
AT THE DISH
For Gray, junior second baseman Noah McGowan was 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the team. Coolen was 2-for-4 with a RBI, while redshirt freshman Matt Carpenter was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. For Scarlet, redshirt freshman Casey Demko went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Sophomore catcher Jacob Barnwell and freshman outfielder Dominic Canzone each were 2-for-4 with a run scored. Both teams registered nine hits in the game and both squads did not record an error.
STARTERS WERE SOLID
Both starting pitchers had strong outings in game two of the series. Redshirt senior right-hander Yianni Pavlopoulos tossed 4.2 innings and limited the Gray bats to one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore left-hander Connor Curlis tossed four scoreless innings for the Gray squad on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. In all, the Buckeye pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts on the bump today.
GRAY SCORES FIRST
After the first four frames went scoreless, Gray struck the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fifth. With a runner on third base, junior outfielder Tyler Cowles slapped a single to the left side to plate sophomore catcher Andrew Fishel, who led off the inning with a walk.
SCARLET ANSWERS IN THE SIXTH
But the Gray lead wouldn’t last long. The Scarlet bats jumped on top with three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth. The bases were loaded after singles by Barnwell, Canzone and Brady Cherry. Zach Ratcliff tied the game at 1-all when he lined a single to center field. After a bases loaded walk to Ridge Winand, Demko pushed home a third run on an RBI ground out.
GRAY RESPONDS IN THE BOTOTM HALF
The Gray bats responded quickly to the two-run deficit in the bottom half of the sixth. A one-out two-run double down the right field line by Carpenter scored one run. Freshman Clayton Surrell knotted the score at 3-all with an infield single. Right-handed pitcher Curtiss Irving came up big for Scarlet out of the bullpen when he struck out back-to-back batters to end the sixth.
