COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was a weekend of celebration for the Ohio State baseball program.
The 1966 Ohio State Baseball National Championship Team began its “Golden Year” 50th anniversary celebration as the Buckeyes were recognized in the third quarter of the Ohio State-Hawai’i football game Sept. 12 in Ohio Stadium. More than 20 members from the team were in attendance as the crowd 107,145 gave a nice applause to the national champs.
The group held a banquet on Friday evening and continued its celebration Saturday at ‘The Shoe. The 50th anniversary will culminate next spring with their recongition at the 2016 College World Series in Omaha. OSU captain Chuck Brinkman spoke with the 2016 Buckeyes at fall practice on Sunday.
“Don’t take for granted the opportunity you have here,” Brinkman said. “When you get older, you look back on how great it is to play for The Ohio State University. The alumni support is fantastic and we will be cheering you on next spring.”
Some notes on the 1966 National Championship Team:
- Ohio State defeated Oklahoma State, 8-2, in the finals of the 20th annual College World Series to cap a 27-6 season and the program’s first national title.
- OSU pitcher Steve Arlin was named the tournament’s most outstanding player, while Russ Nagelson, Brinkman and Bo Rein and Ray Shoup were also named to the all-tournament team.
- Led by head coach Marty Karow, the Buckeyes won their seventh Big Ten title in 1966, wininng the conference crown three straight years from 1965-67.
