COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State baseball team fell in the series opener against Maryland, 13-4, Friday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 33-14 overall and 12-7 in Big Ten play, while the Terrapins improve to 34-16 and 12-7 in conference action.
The Terps jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Brandon Lowe sent a bloop single into right center to plate a run. Lamonte Wade began the night with a lead-off double off the wall in left. OSU starter Tanner Tully limited the damage to one run when he struck out Jose Cuas on a good breaking ball to leave a runner on second base.
The Buckeyes came right back to take a 2-1 lead on a sac flies in both the first and second innings, respectively. With the bases loaded, Nick Sergakis pushed a fly ball into right center to score Troy Montgomery. In the second, Tre’ Gantt crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Craig Nennig. Gantt reached third base when he cracked his first triple of the season vs. Maryland starter Mike Shawaryn.
However, the Terps answered with three runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage on the Buckeyes. Back-to-back RBI doubles tied the game at 2-2. A sac bunt plated a third run followed by a single to left field by Jamal Wade. A solo home run with two down in the fourth by Kevin Smith extended it to a three-run game.
After Ohio State stranded two runners in the bottom of the fourth, the Terrapins opened up the game to an 8-2 lead, plating three runs on two-out singles against Tully. Left-hander John Havird relieved Tully following a two-run single by Kengo Kawahara. Shea Murray came into the game with one out in the eighth. Maryland added five runs on four hits in the frame.
The OSU bats could only push two more run against the UMD pitching. L Grant Davis had a RBI single in the bottom of the eighth vs. reliever Bobby Ruse, while Pat Porter had a RBI groundout for his 40th of the year.
In all, the Buckeyes left 12 runners on base, while the OSU pitching staff gave up a season-high 13 runs on 19 hits. The Terrapins had nine two-out RBI hits. Shawaryn received the win to improve to 11-1, throwing seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits, three walks and eight strikeouts.
Tully received the loss to fall to 4-4, allowing eight runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Havird threw the next 2.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Murray pitched the final 1.1 frames and allowed two runs on four hits with a walk.
The Buckeyes and Terrapins meet at 3:05 p.m. ET Saturday in game two at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
GAME NOTES
• Troy Montgomery extended his reached base streak to 24-consecutive games with a lead-off single in the top of the first.
• Montgomery registered his B1G-best 30th steal of the year. He’s five shy of tying the OSU single-season record.
• Tre’ Gantt hit his first career triple in the bottom of the second. He notched his fourth multi-hit game and extended his hit streak to five straight contests (season-high).
• Aaron Gretz went 2-for-3 to pick up his fifth multi-hit game. He’s on a five-game hit streak.
• Pat Porter extended his reached base streak to 27 games with a single to left field.
• The OSU bullpen gave up its first run in six games, snapping a 23 innings scoreless streak.
• Tonight’s game was the longest of the year for the Buckeyes (3:12).
