BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Ohio State baseball team fell, 7-0, against Florida Atlantic Saturday at FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. The loss was Ohio State’s first of the season and dropped the team’s record to 4-1. FAU improves to 5-1 in 2015.
The Owls scored seven runs with two outs to claim their fifth home win of the year. Ohio State allowed seven walks and left six runners on base to help FAU even the series at 1-1.
Ohio State had an opportunity in the third to put some runs on the board after back-to-back singles by Craig Nennig and Connor Sabanosh with no down, but a groundball double play ended the OSU scoring chance vs. FAU starter Drew Jackson, who pitched seven shutout innings on five hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Ohio State sophomore starting pitcher Travis Lakins allowed a walk and a single on a hit-and-run to put runners on the corners with one down. After a fly out to shallow left, the Owls claimed a 1-0 lead on a swinging bunt down the third base line by Ricky Santiago. FAU extended its lead to four runs in the bottom of the fifth following a two-run double Santiago and a RBI single by Roman Collins vs. Lakins.
The Scarlet and Gray left two runners on base in the sixth after Jackson collected two fly outs. Sabanosh started the inning with a lead-off double down the left field line and Troy Kuhn worked a walk.
The OSU defense made two great plays in the field in game two. Porter had a diving catch down the right field line for the second out of the fifth. In the sixth, Kuhn came charging in from third base on a sac bunt for the putout that ended with a sliding tag on first base by Nick Sergakis for the assist.
Lakins drops to 0-1 on the year. He finished with 6.0 innings pitched, six hits, three walks and four runs. Junior lefty John Havird came in in the seventh and pitched 1.1 innings on three runs, two hits and four walks. Freshman pitcher Seth Kinker tossed the final two outs and limited the Owls to one hit. Offensively, Sophomore Ronnie Dawson and Sabanosh each had two hits in the game.
