COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Gray bats exploded for 17 hits in a 12-6 win in Game 5 to claim the 2015 Scarlet and Gray World Series Saturday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The contest was a competitive one with five lead changes and coach Beals was pleased with what he saw out of the 2016 Buckeyes.
“I thought the game was competitive today,” Beals said. “It got a little bit loose at the end, but it was a great ball game early on. Overall, the Scarlet & Gray World Series was everything we wanted it to be from a competitive standpoint. We got to see a lot of guys playing in critical situations. It was good to see some of our top players have really strong performances. The home run by Ronnie was a difference maker this afternoon. You need your big time players to make big time plays and we were able to do that. We are pleased with what we saw out of the guys the last two weeks.”
Ronnie Dawson went 2-for-5 with five RBI and a home run, while Jordan McDonough was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Casey Demko also had a strong first fall series, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored in the finale. Troy Montgomery continued to shine, going 2-for-4 with a double, walk and a pair of runs scored. Overall, seven different Gray members collected multi-hit performances.
McDonough sent a two-out RBI single up the middle to give Gray the early 1-0 lead. Montgomery led off the inning with a double off the wall in center. But the Scarlet squad answered quickly in the following inning with two runs. After Brady Cherry scored on a Gray throwing error, the Scarlet squad played the squeeze play to perfection. Azim Qadri placed the bunt as Jacob Bosiokovic took off down the third base line and slid by the attempted tag at the plate for the 2-1 advantage.
The battle and forth battle was just beginning. Gray regained the lead in bottom of the third with some timely hitting and aggressive base running. With runners on first and second, Gray put both in motion as Dawson slapped a single through the right side to make it 2-2 contest. McDonough then claimed his second RBI of the day with a single to left to score Troy Kuhn for the 3-2 lead. Scarlet starter Ryan Feltner keep it a one-run deficit with back-to-back backwards Ks.
In the fourth, Dawson extended the Gray lead to three runs when he blasted a two-out, three run home run over the wall in right.
Scarlet scattered five hits in the top of the sixth to cut the Gray lead to two runs. Bosiokovic and Ryan Leffel both had RBI hits.
Great defense highlighted the bottom of the sixth when Jacob VanderWal made an outstanding diving grab in deep center before the relay at the plate claimed the inning-ending double play. The defensive play ignited some Scarlet momentum in the top of the seventh when the squad scored two runs on sacrifice flies to tie at 6-all. Craig Nennig and Jalen Washington collected the sac flies.
The competitive contest saw its fifth lead change in the bottom of the seventh. Gray came right back in the bottom half with five runs on five hits to regain an 11-6 advantage.
Curtiss Irving picked up the win, throwing 0.2 innings with no hits or runs allowed. Gray starter Austin Woodby received a no decision in the contest after tossing 5.2 innings on six hits, four runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
