CONWAY, S.C. – The Ohio State baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Coastal Carolina in 12 innings Sunday afternoon at Watson Stadium. Tucker Frawley’s bases-loaded single with one down in the bottom of the 12th gave the Chanticleers the victory as both teams move to 8-6 on the season.
Coastal loaded the bases with one out against Ohio State right-hander Josh Dezse on a hit batter, a single and an intentional walk to set up the game-winning single by Frawley.
Things were quiet until the fourth when the Buckeyes rallied with two down. Coastal starter Austin Wallace was on a pitch count and was relieved by Josh Powell after 3.1 scoreless innings. Powell was able to get Ryan Cypret to fly out for the second out of the inning but then hit Dezse, gave up an infield single to David Corna and then an RBI double down the left-field line by Brad Hallberg to give the Buckeyes the 1-0 lead.
After Ohio State starter Greg Greve cruised through the first three frames, Coastal took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out, two-run single to left-center by Sloan Gilliam.
Both teams were then able to put zeroes up on the board until the Buckeyes tied it in the top of the eighth. Greg Solomon reached on an error to lead off the inning and a single through the left side by Aaron Gretz put runners at the corners with nobody out. After a strikeout of Joe Ciamacco, Tim Wetzel squeezed home Solomon with the tying run against Coastal reliever Javier Reynoso.
Dezse came on and tossed his second-straight perfect inning in the bottom of the ninth to send the Buckeyes to their second extra-inning game of the year.
The Buckeyes then put two runners on in the 10th and one in the 11th but could not move anybody across.
Dezse. Corna, Hallberg, Kirby Pellant and Gretz each had a hit for the Buckeyes while Greve allowed two earned over five innings and Andrew Armstrong tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
The Buckeyes play at home for the first time in 2012, opening Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium with a three-game set against Austin Peay next weekend in Columbus.
