Alex Wimmers Throws No-Hitter For Ft. Myers – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Buckeye ace and 2010 College Baseball Foundation National Pitcher of the Year Alex Wimmers tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday to lead the Ft. Myers Miracle to a 1-0 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native walked a pair but faced the minimum 21 hitters while striking out five.
It was a familiar situation for Wimmers, who threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in Ohio State history, striking out 14 on May 2, 2009, against Michigan.
The 21st overall pick of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft by the Minnesota Twins has battled back from injuries at the start of the 2011 campaign to post a 4.20 earned-run average with 39 strikeouts in 40.2 innings pitched in limited action for High-A Ft. Myers in his second season of pro ball.
“There were a bunch of great plays tonight, I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” Wimmers told MLB.com. “Finishing (the season) up strong is awesome — it’s a huge confidence boost.”
For his career at Ohio State, Wimmers ranks among the all-time Top 5 in several statistical categories. He is fourth at Ohio State in fewest runs allowed (81) and he is fifth in strikeouts (273), fewest earned runs allowed (71) and fewest hits (173). He is also sixth in earned run average (2.94). His 18 career victories rank 23rd. His strikeout total is also good for a tie for 16th-place all-time in the Big Ten Conference.
