Pro Scouts Day at Bill Davis Stadium – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Thursday, Oct. 7, was pro scout day at Bill Davis Stadium and more than 20 scouts took advantage of the invite to watch Ohio State coach Greg Beals and his staff put the Buckeyes through a series of drills on a glorious warm and sunny afternoon under spectacular blue skies.
Calling it “a day for the scouts…a day where we cater to the professional scouts and run drills they want to see our players perform,” Beals led the Buckeyes through a 20-minute stretch followed by 60-yard dash sprints, throwing drills, batting practice and a simulated game where nine pitchers threw against five hitters apiece in a game-type situation.
“I think our players responded very well,” Beals said. “And I think the scouts really enjoyed it and liked the fact that we essentially gave this practice to them. This was their day.”
It was also a day that helps Beals and his coaches fulfill a promise they give to parents and potential recruits when discussing the benefits of Ohio State and the merits of the coaching staff.
“We can’t go into a recruit’s home and say ‘we’re going to help you get to the next level in every possible way’ and then not have a day for the pro scouts to come in and evaluate our players,” Beals explained. “Not all programs choose to hold a day like this, but we feel it is necessary if we truly want to help our players fulfill their dreams of playing at the next level.”
While pressure may have been on those seniors and upper classmen who are draft eligible, no one showed it and everyone seemed to be enjoying the day and the spirit of competing in front of the scouts.
“I think that was the best BP session I have ever had,” freshman Tim Wetzel, from Mayfield, Ohio, and Mayfield High School, said after leaving the batting cage. “This is great. I’m having a lot of fun.”
So were his teammates. And on such a fine day in October, the scouts were, too.
