COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind five strong innings from starter Drew Rucinski and at least one hit from nine different players, the Scarlet team took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five Scarlet & Gray World Series with a 7-1 victory over the Gray Wednesday evening at Bill Davis Stadium.
Rucinski breezed through five shutout innings, giving up just three hits and one free pass while striking out five. Gray starter Dean Wolosiansky gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out a pair over 4.1 innings pitched for Gray.
Sophomore Ryan Cypret went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI while sophomore Brad Hallberg finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Scarlet. Senior shortstop Tyler Engle paced the Gray squad, going 2-for-2 with a walk.
After both pitchers cruised through the first two innings, Scarlet catcher Steel Russell led off the bottom of the third with a single off Wolosiansky. Russell advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Derek Hannahs and, after a punchout of Hunter Mayfield, scored on a single through the left side by Cypret to give Scarlet a 1-0 lead after three.
Hannahs led off the bottom of the fifth with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a bunt single by pinch-hitter and Duke transfer Mike Carroll, and scored on a wild pitch. After Carroll stole second and advanced to third on the wild pitch, Wolosiansky’s throw to first on a come-backer to the mound by Brian DeLucia sailed down the right field line and scored Carroll to push the Scarlet lead to 3-0 and knock the fifth-year senior starter from the game.
“The big hit of the game came from Hannahs,” first-year Ohio State coach Greg Beals, who coached third base for both teams, said. “He ripped that double and that kind of sparked all the guys [into thinking] if a freshman nine-hole hitter can get a big hit, they can get in there and also get a big hit.”
Cole Brown replaced Wolosiansky with one down and DeLucia on second and gave up a single to right off the bat of Hallberg and a walk to Joe Ciamacco. After striking out freshman first baseman Josh Dezse, junior transfer Brad Hutton knocked in DeLucia and Hallberg with a double to extend the lead to 5-0 after five frames.
After a flyout by Hannahs to lead off the bottom of the sixth, Carroll walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Cypret drove him in on a double to left-center. Freshman Cory Angelo came in to pinch run for Cypret and promptly scored on an RBI single up the middle by Hallberg, pushing the lead to 7-0 after six.
After senior Jared Strayer came on to replace Rucinski and worked a scoreless inning for Scarlet, Dezse saw his first action on the mound in the top of the seventh. After a groundout by Greg Greve to lead off the frame, freshman infielder Jacob Hayes plugged the gap in right-center for a triple. Dezse responded with a strikeout before Tyler Williams singled off the foot of Dezse to drive in Hayes for the lone Gray run of the game.
Team Gray will look to even the best-of-five series when the two teams meet for Game 2 at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Bill Davis Stadium.
