Baseball: Ohio State Hosts Marshall Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. on Buck-a-Burger Night – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the final week of 2008 home games at Bill Davis Stadium, Ohio State starts a six-game home stand by hosting the Marshall Thundering Herd in a 6:35 p.m. game Wednesday. The Buckeyes are 24-21 overall and 11-12 in the Big Ten Conference.
Marshall entered its final home Conference USA weekend against No. 28 Southern Miss last weekend with wins in nine of its last 12 games. The Herd won the first game against Southern Miss, 16-10, but then dropped the next two games, 12-8 and 5-0. Marshall enters the game against Ohio State with a 24-24-1 record and a 10-10-1 mark in C-USA.

THE BUCKS vs. THE HERD
Ohio State has never lost to Marshall. The two teams first met in 1917 and the Buckeyes have won all 14 meetings. The teams last played in 2000; a 10-7 Ohio State victory in Rock Hill, S.C.
9-0 UNDER COACH TODD
Bob Todd’s Buckeyes are 9-0 vs. Marshall. When the two teams played in 1990, it was the first meeting in 62 years.
BUCKS DROP THREE TO UM
Ohio State is coming off a disappointing 3-1 series loss to Michigan over the weekend. Three of the games could have gone either way: Michigan winning the first two games by 4-1 and 6-1 scores and Ohio State taking Game 3, 3-2. The finale was all Michigan: 15-1. Some notes:
Game 1: Michigan scored two runs in the seventh to extend a 2-1 lead.
Game 2: Michigan scored four runs in the sixth to extend a 2-1 lead.
Game 3: Ohio State scored the winning run in the top of the seventh when Justin Miller drove in Cory Kovanda, who led off with a double.
Dean Wolosiansky pitched 6.2 innings to get the Game 3 win and improve to 7-2 on the season and 4-1 in the Big Ten.
Eric Best got the Game 3 final out for his team-leading sixth save of the season.
It was unfortunate how J.B. Shuck could strike out 11 Wolverine batters in 4.2 innings and but couldn’t find the plate according to the home plate umpire in the decisive third inning of game four and walked three batters that helped Michigan to a seven-run inning. He walked one batter the rest of the way.
CELEBRATING 125 YEARS
Ohio State’s final home Big Ten Conference weekend of the season May 9-11 vs. Illinois will be a celebration of 125 years of Ohio State baseball that will feature two legendary coaches being honored for their accomplishments.
Marty Karow, Ohio State skipper from 1951 until 1976 and who led the Buckeyes to four College World Series, including winning the national title in 1966, will have his jersey No. 13 officially retired by the athletics department in a ceremony between DH games May 10.
Bob Todd, the winningest coach in Ohio State history with more than 800 wins in his 21 seasons as Ohio State coach, will be honored before the Friday, May 9, game on his induction into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Ohio State’s four seniors Dan DeLucia, Tony Kennedy, Chris Macke and Rory Meister will be honored before the 1:05 p.m. Sunday game. Additionally:
Past Ohio State baseball captains there have been 151 through the years will hold a captains breakfast Saturday with the 2008 captains DeLucia, the school’s first-ever three-time captain, and Justin Miller having an opportunity to meet and mingle with past leaders.
A collection of Ohio State baseball trophies will be on display and new historical signage will be installed on the outfield wall and on the arches in the stadium concourse.
Saturday the Diamond Club, the baseball program’s booster organization, will hold its annual BBQ for its members.

Ohio State hosts Illinois in its final Big Ten weekend Friday through Sunday. Other series this weekend: Indiana is at Northwestern; Michigan travels to Minnesota; Iowa is at Penn State; and Michigan State is at Purdue.

Freshman Victor Gomez earned C-USA’s Hitter of the Week award two weeks ago. Gomez has nine home runs. Against Southern Miss, he went 5-for-13 at the plate with seven RBI. Here’s a few more Herdsmen to watch:
Adam Yeager has 34 stolen bases to lead C-USA. He is tied for sixth in the nation.
Nate Lape, the Herd’s leader in almost every offensive category, hit three home runs April 1 at Dayton. No fooling. The junior slugger now has 14 long balls on the season and 51 RBI.
Catcher Tommy Johnson went 8-for-13 at the plate vs. Southern Miss with five RBI. He has eight home runs on the season.
BUCKEYE NOTES & NUMBERS
J.B. Shuck, in three games vs. Michigan, hit .667 with six hits in nine at-bats. The junior had a four-hit game in the opener and came back with two more hits in Game 3.
Dan DeLucia could not get his left shoulder loose in his G2 start against the Wolverines and ended up throwing only three innings. He was effective while he was in there. He allowed just one hit, struck out three and did not walk a batter and he exited with Ohio State in the lead for the sixth time in his eight starts this season.
The Buckeye bats had their quietest series of the year against Michigan. The players combined to hit just .207 with 24 hits in 116 at-bats.
Ohio State pitchers were solid against the Wolverines limiting them to a team average of .253 (18-for-71) through the first three games. In game four UM had 14 hits.
The Buckeyes is in fourth place in the Big Ten. Penn State and NU are tied for fifth at 11-13. And just one-half game out of a Big Ten tournament playoff spot, and only one game behind Ohio State, is Michigan State.
Ohio State’s final series is at Iowa. Penn State hosts Iowa and travels to Minnesota. Northwestern hosts Indiana and plays at Michigan. Michigan State is at Purdue and closes at home against Indiana.
Michael Arp’s two hits in Game 4 vs. Michigan extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games. Ohio State now has five players with 10-or-more game hitting streaks this season (17 by Tony Kennedy and Ryan Meade; 11 by Cory Kovanda; 10 by Cory Rupert and Arp).
Shuck and Kovanda lead with 17 multi-hit games and Justin Miller is third with 14 such games.
Miller, the team RBI leader with 42, leads with 14 multi-RBI games.
Ohio State is 21-7 this season when it out-hits its opponent; 1-12 when out-hit.
Ohio State is 18-2 when leading after six innings; 3-14 when trailing.
Unlucky 7th: Ohio State has been outscored in the seventh inning, 48-25.
Eric Best has five saves in Big Ten games and six total.
Dean Wolosiansky lowered his Big Ten games ERA to 2.72. Jake Hale’s ERA is at 3.98.
