Ohio State Encourages Columbus City Schools Students to Reach Higher – Ohio State Buckeyes

CCS Baseball Day a hit for fourth year in a row
COLUMBUS, Ohio Approximately 2,600 sixth-grade students from Columbus City Schools converged on The Ohio State University athletics campus Tuesday for the fourth-annual CCS Baseball Day. The theme of the day encouraged students to “Reach Higher” in academics and extracurricular activities in pursuit of higher education.
Students had to meet several academic and attendance standards to attend CCS Baseball Day. As a reward, they were treated to an entertaining and educational presentation at Value City Arena before taking in the Buffalo vs. Ohio State baseball game at Bill Davis Stadium.
The program opened with a lifting drill by OSU ROTC and educational videos starring Ohio State student-athletes demonstrating the science involved in their specific sports, as well as reemphasizing the “Reach Higher” slogan. Ohio State also distributed copies of the educational videos to each CCS school for use in the classroom. The videos can be viewed at the links provided above.
Buckeye great Archie Griffin, a product of the Columbus City Schools system and the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, spoke to the audience of sixth-graders, stressing his “Three D’s” of life Desire, Dedication and Determination. He followed a brief speech from Gene Harris, superintendent of Columbus City Schools.
The presentation closed with magic show with host Jeff Petz, who entertained the crowd while explaining how knowledge of math and science are what it takes to perform magic.
After that, it was on to baseball. The group filed into Bill Davis Stadium for lunch provided by the Children’s Hunger Alliance and the tilt between the Bulls and Buckeyes. Ohio State erased an 11-run deficit and rallied for a walk-off 14-13 victory, proving the day was truly a hit.
