COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State lost to Michigan State, 6-4, Saturday in the second game of a Big Ten doubleheader at Bill Davis Stadium. The Spartans won game one of the doubleheader, 5-1.
The Buckeyes fell to 28-14 on the year and 12-9 in the Big Ten. The Spartans improved to 17-23 and 8-14 in conference play. The series wraps up with a single nine-inning game beginning at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. Ohio State won game one of the series 8-4 Friday.
After two scoreless innings, Ohio State took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. The Buckeyes collected five hits in the inning, four singles and a double, with J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) and Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) each driving in a run.
The OSU lead grew to 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) led off the fourth with a single and moved to second on a Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) sacrifice bunt. Cory Kovanda (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) followed with an RBI single.
The Spartans cut the Ohio State lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the fifth but the Buckeyes responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) hit a one out double and after an intentional walk to Shuck, Miller singled through the left side to score Fryer and make it 4-1.
Michigan State rallied though and took the lead at 5-4 with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Spartans extended their lead to 6-4 with another run in the top of the seventh and held off OSU in the bottom of the seventh for the victory. Josh Edgin (Fr., Three Springs, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) started the game for OSU and went 4.1 innings. The lefty gave up one earned run on three hits. He walked two and struck out none. Eric Best (Fr., Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) relieved Edgin and went 0.2 innings, giving up two earned runs. Trey Fausnaugh (Sr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) pitched the final two innings for the Buckeyes and took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits.
John Dwan started the game for MSU and went 4.1 innings. He gave up four earned runs on nine hits, striking out one and walking one. Chris Cullen pitched 1.2 innings and picked up the win for the Spartans, improving to 2-2. Mike Monterey pitched the seventh and earned his sixth save of the year
Ohio State had 13 hits in the game and Michigan State 11. Fryer, Shuck, Miller and Kovanada all had two hits in the game, with Miller driving in two runs.
