Ohio State claimed its eighth Big Ten Tournament championship last Sunday with a 4-2 victory over Minnesota in Ann Arbor, Mich. to earn the Big Ten’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
The Buckeyes, who are making their 18th NCAA tournament appearance overall and the 12th since 1991, were awarded the No. 3 seed in the NCAA College Station Regional at Olsen Field in College Station, Texas and will play No. 2 seed Lousiana-Lafayette at 2 p.m. ET Friday.
Joining the Buckeyes and Ragin Cajuns in College Station will be host and No. 1 seed Texas A&M and No. 4 seed Le Moyne. Those teams will play at 8 p.m. Friday. The losers of the two games Friday will play Saturday at 2 p.m., while the winners will meet Saturday at 8 p.m.
The winner of game three will play the loser of game four on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing to play the undefeated team in the championship Sunday at 8 p.m. If the undefeated team loses, the second championship game will be played Monday at 7:30 p.m.
The winner of the regional advances to a best-of-three super regional and will play the winner of the Rice Regional that includes Rice, Prairie View, Baylor and Texas Christian.
Louisiana-Lafayette (43-15), the Sun Belt Conference regular-season champs, earned an at-large bid, while Texas A&M (44-16) earned an automatic bid by winning the Big 12 Tournament championship as did Le Moyne (34-17) by winning the Metro Atlantic Tournament championship.
The opening weekend of the NCAA Championship features 16 four-team regionals playing double-elimination format. Regional play runs from June 1-4, with the 16 winners advancing to the next round of competition. The eight two-team super regional sites will be determined on Monday, June 4, with play scheduled for June 8-11 in a best-of-three series. The Men’s College World Series will take place June 15-25, at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.

BIG TEN SENDS THREE TEAMS TO NCAA’S
Minnesota and Michigan were also selected to participate as at-large teams, giving the Big Ten three teams in the NCAA tournament, the most the conference has sent since 2000, when Illinois, Minnesota and Penn State received tournament berths.

Matt Angle leads Ohio State with a .365 average and also leads the team with 51 runs, four triples, 22 stolen bases and 35 walks, and is second in hits with 74. Justin Miller leads OSU with 76 hits and is tied for the team lead in RBI with 49. He is fourth on the team in batting at .342. Miller is the only Buckeye to start or play in all 59 games. Jason Zoeller leads the team with nine home runs and a .571 slugging percentage, and is second on the team in average at .352. Eric Fryer leads OSU with 15 doubles and is tied for the squad lead in RBI with 49. J.B. Shuck is third on the team in hitting at .348.
On the mound, Cory Luebke is 8-1 with a 1.84 ERA and a team-high 91 strikeouts in 107.2 innings pitched. Shuck is 4-3 with a 4.48 ERA and is second on the team with 55 strikeouts. Jake Hale has been phenominal since moving out of the bullpen and back into the starting rotation. He is 4-3 with a 4.19 ERA and 46 strikouts. He also leads the team with 10 saves. Josh Barrera is 4-1 with a 4.41 ERA and Eric Best is 3-1 with a 3.68 ERA.
For the year, Ohio State has a .316 batting average and 330 RBI. The Buckeyes have 71 stolen bases in 93 attempts. On the mound, OSU has a 4.38 ERA and is holding opponents to a .277 average.
TODD HAS 37 WINS IN 15 OF 20 SEASONS, AND AT LEAST 32 IN ALL 20 SEASONS
Since becoming Ohio State head coach in 1988, Bob Todd has notched at least 37 wins in 15 out of his 20 seasons. He has at least 32 wins in all 20 seasons. The Buckeyes are 37-22 on the year.
OHIO STATE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The appearance in the NCAA tournament is the 18th in Ohio State history and the 12th under 20th-year head coach Bob Todd, who has guided the Buckeyes to the tournament in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2007. The Buckeyes have also made appearances in 1951, 1955, 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1982. Ohio State has four appearances in the College World Series – 1951, 1965, 1966 and 1967. Ohio State was the runner-up in 1965 and won the last baseball national championship by a Big Ten team in 1966. The Buckeyes are the only Big Ten team to appear in more than one NCAA Super Regional, advancing in 1999 and 2003. Penn State is the only other Big Ten team to play in a super regional.
Todd has not missed the tournament in consecutive years since he first guided the Buckeyes to the tournament in 1991. Ohio State has made five appearances in the NCAA tournament since 2000. Its most recent trip was in 2005 when the team finished third in the Corvallis Regional, losing 4-3 to No. 1 seed and host Oregon State, beating No. 2 seed Virginia, 2-1, and losing to No. 3 seed St. John’s, 7-1. Todd is 18-22 all-time in the NCAA tournament and Ohio State is 39-35 in the tournament.
In the old eight-team regional format (prior to 1999), the Buckeyes came within one game of the College World Series two times under Todd, who became the Buckeyes’ coach in 1988. The Buckeyes were the runner-up in 1992 at LSU (losing to Cal State-Fullerton) and in 1993 at Georgia Tech (losing to Wichita State).
BUCKEYES AT THE CWS
Thirty-nine years ago, the Ohio State Buckeyes ruled college baseball. OSU defeated Oklahoma State, 8-2, and won the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The following year, in 1967, the Buckeyes returned to Omaha and were eliminated in two games. Since that time, OSU has never made it back to the College World Series. Ohio State has appeared a total of four times at the CWS (1951, 1965, 1966 and 1967). The Buckeyes have compiled a 9-7 record with one national championship (1966) and one runner-up finish (1965).
OHIO STATE HEADS TO TEXAS FOR SECOND TIME IN REGIONAL ACTION
When Ohio State plays in the Lone Star State this weekend it will be the second time that it has played in an NCAA Regional in the state of Texas. The Buckeyes played in Austin, Texas in 1982 and went 0-2 at Disch-Falk Stadium. Ohio State has made 12 appearances in the tournament in regional play and made five other appearances in the old district playoffs.

SINCE CREATION OF SUPER REGIONAL ROUND, BUCKEYES THREE SEED FOR THIRD TIME
In the nine years since the NCAA went from eight, eight-team regionals to 16 four-team regionals for the 1999 season, the Buckeyes have advanced to six NCAA tournaments and been the No. 3 seed three times. Ohio State was also a three seed in 2002 and 2003, a one seed in 1999, a two seed in 2001 and a four seed in 2005.
AGAINST 2007 TOURNAMENT TEAMS
The Buckeyes have played three teames that made it to the NCAA tournament this year and are 5-8 against those opponents. Two of those teams are Big Ten rivals Minnesota and Michigan, and the third team is Western Carolina. Ohio State went 4-2 against Minnesota, 1-4 against Michigan and 0-2 against Western Carolina.
ABOUT THE RAGIN CAJUNS
Louisiana-Lafayette, the No. 2 seed, is 43-15 overall and finished 23-7 atop the Sun Belt conference. The Ragin Cajuns lost to New Orleans, 8-2, in the Sun Belt conference tournament final but earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Jonathan Lucroy leads the team with a .364 batting average, 91 hits, 19 doubles, 17 home runs, 65 RBI and a .668 slugging percentage. Jefferie Tatford is second on the team in hitting at .362 and leads the team with 61 runs scored. As a team the Cajuns are batting .312 and have a .964 fielding percentage. Buddy Glass and Hunter Moody are the two primary starters for ULL, with Glass at 7-4 with a 3.28 ERA and Moody at 8-3 and 4.14. The pitching staff has an ERA of 3.79.
AGAINST LOUISIANA -LAFAYETTE
Ohio State leads the all-time series with Louisiana-Lafayette 2-1, with all three games at ULL. The series goes back to only 1989 when the Buckeyes lost the first matchup 8-1, before winning 10-3 in 2001 and 7-3 in 2003.

No. 1 seed and host Texas A&M is 44-16 overall and finished 13-13 in the Big 12 Conference. The Aggies beat Baylor, 14-6, in the conference championship game to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. A&M is batting .320 and owns a fielding percentage of .963. Blake Stouffer (.391) and Parker Dalton (.384) lead the team at the plate. Stouffer leads the club with 90 hits, 19 doubles, 76 RBI and a .626 slugging percentage. Craig Stinson has a team-high 11 home runs. The Aggie pitching staff has a 4.02 ERA and is paced by Kyle Nicholson (11-1, 1.92 ERA) and David Newmann (10-1, 3.21)

ABOUT THE DOLPHINS
Le Moyne is the No. 4 seed in College Station and is 34-17. The Dolphins won the Metro Atlantic regular season championship with a 22-3 record and captured the conference tournament for the automatic NCAA bid. The Syracuse, N.Y. school is batting .295 as a team and is led by Andy Parrino who is hitting .408. Parrino leads the team with 78 hits, nine home runs and 44 RBI. The top two starters for Le Moyne are Eric Beaulac (8-1, 2.55 ERA) and Bobby Blevins (9-2, 2.77). Ryan Woods has 14 saves and is 7-1 with a 1.31 ERA. The Dolphins pitching staff has a 3.82 ERA.

OHIO STATE WINS BIG TEN TYING EIGHTH CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
Michael Arp hit a two-run, pinch-hit double in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 2-all tie and lift Ohio State past Minnesota, 4-2, in the final of the Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes went 4-0 in the tournament, becoming the first six seed to capture the tournament title. The Buckeyes knocked off the top three seeds, beating No. 3 seed Penn State, 10-3, No. 1 seed Michigan, 4-2, and No. 2 seed Minnesota twice, 10-9 in 11 innings and again in the final. It is the eighth tournament title for OSU since the tournament began in 1981, tying the eight that Minnesota has. The Buckeyes are 48-29 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament.
LUEBKE NAMED BIG TEN TOURNAMENT MOP
Pitcher Cory Luebke was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Big Ten tournament after going 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in two starts. He allowed just two runs, both earned, in 14.2 innings, coming back to pitch the championship game on three days rest. The Big Ten Pitcher of the Year walked four and struck out eight, holding opposing batters to a .196 average. Luebke is the 10th Buckeye to earn recognition as the Most Outstanding Player at the tournament.
FOUR BUCKEYES NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
In addition to Cory Luebke, the Buckeyes had three additional players named the Big Ten All-Tournament team. Joining Luebke was pitcher Jake Hale (2-0, 1.74 ERA), outfielder Jacob Howell (.571, 7 runs, 2 RBI) and third baseman Tony Kennedy (.368, 3 RBI).

The Big Ten Tournament title was head coach Bob Todd’s 800th win at Ohio State. He is 800-407-2 in 20 years at OSU. He is 924-489-2 all-time.
BUCKEYES BACK ON TOP AS BIG TEN TOURNAMENT LEADER
Ohio State’s four wins in the Big Ten Tournament moved OSU back into the all-time lead for winning percentage in tournament play at .623 (48-29). Minnesota is second at .607 (54-35).
LUEBKE NAMED BIG TEN PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Ohio State junior left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke was named the Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Year when the conference announced its all-conference teams and individual awards May 22.
Luebke, one of three unanimous first team picks, is the fifth Buckeye to be honored as the conference’s top pitcher and the first to win the award since Scott Lewis took home the honors in 2003. In all games this year, the Maria Stein, Ohio (Marion Local) native led the Big Ten in ERA (1.84 ERA), strikeouts (91) and innings pitched (107.2), while holding his opponents to a stingy .213 batting average. The Big Ten’s 2007 strikeout king, Luebke fanned 50 batters through 56.1 innings of work in the conference season while walking just 24 batters. Luebke finished the regular season with a 7-1 overall record and went 3-1 in conference. His seven wins were tied for first in the league.
FIVE BUCKEYES NAMED ALL-BIG TEN
In addition to Cory Luebke being one of three unanimous first team selections, four additional Buckeyes garnered all-conference honors. Catcher Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) was named second team All-Big Ten and outfielders Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) and J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion), and first baseman Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) were third team selections. Senior Jacob Howell (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) was Ohio State’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
ANGLE LEADS OSU AT THE PLATE, HITTING .365 ON THE YEAR
Matt Angle leads OSU with a .365 average on the year. Angle missed the last two Big Ten Tournament games with a groin injury and is day to day. Jason Zoeller is second at .352 and J.B. Shuck is third at 348.
LUEBKE PACES OSU PITCHING STAFF AT 8-1
Junior pitcher Cory Luebke leads the OSU pitching staff with an 8-1 record, 1.84 ERA and a team-high 91 strikeouts. In Big Ten play, he went 3-1 with a 2.24 ERA in eight starts. In his 15 starts, Luebke has not gone fewer than 5.2 innings and has two complete games.
HALE ON FIRE SINCE RETURNING TO STARTING ROTATION
Since returning to the starting rotation, 6-7 right-hander Jake Hale has been on a tear. In the three starts he is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings with three complete games. He has walked eight and struck out 16 and is holding opposing batters to a .250 average.

FRESHMEN MAKING CONTRIBUTIONS, 12 HAVE SEEN ACTION
In 59 games this season, a total of 12 Buckeye freshmen have played.
Outfielder Ryan Dew and second baseman Cory Kovanda have seen the most action. Kovanda has appeared in 52 games with 48 starts and is hitting .290. Dew has played in 50 games with 37 starts. Infielder Cory Rupert has played in 34 games, with 28 starts. The other freshman field players to see action are Brian DeLucia, Ben Toussant, Zach Hurley, Chris Griffin and Nick Steponovich.
Rookie pitchers to appear are Theron Minium, Josh Edgin, Eric Best and Taylor Barnes. Best is 3-1 on the year with a 3.68 ERA and Edgin is 2-2 with a 6.33 ERA. Best has thrown 36.2 innings and Edgin 42.2. Minium is 1-2 with a 6.68 ERA in 32.1 innings and Barnes is 1-0 with a 8.68 ERA.

Jake Hale is tied for second in the Big Ten with 10 saves. The sophomore has a team-high 25 appearances on the year and a 4.19 earned run average. He has 46 strikeouts in 58 innings of work. His 10 saves rank tied for second with Cory Cox (2001) on the Ohio State single season list, four behind Matt Davis’ 14 in 2003.
MILLER THIRD IN BIG TEN PLAY WITH A .417 AVERAGE
Justin Miller’s .417 average in Big Ten games ranked third in the league. Purdue’s Ryne White led the conference in hitting at .463.
FAUSNAUGH AND EDGIN PITCH BUCKEYES INTO BIG TEN TOURNAMENT
The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions square off for the fifth straight time when they meet in the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday. Penn State took three of four from OSU last weekend in Happy Valley but Ohio State got the one win it needed to get into the conference tournament. Freshman Josh Edgin and senior Trey Fausnaugh combined to hold PSU to just two runs on six hits in a 3-2 win Sunday. Edgin started and went 6.1 innings, giving up two earned runs, striking out four and walking none. Fausnaugh threw the final 2.2 innings to pick up the win. He did not allow a hit, walking one and striking out two. Jason Zoeller led the Buckeyes at the plate in the four game series hitting .385. Eric Fryer was .308 batting.
LUEBKE, SHUCK AND HALE ALL PITCH WELL IN PSU SERIES DESPITE NOT WINNING
Despite not picking up any wins, OSU starting pitchers Cory Luebke, J.B. Shuck and Jake Hale were all solid in their starts at Penn State over the weekend. Luebke went seven innings and didnt allow an earned run in a no decision. He gave up seven hits, walking one and striking out nine. Shuck pitched a complete game, giving up four earned runs on eight hits in six innings. He walked none and struck out five. Hale also pitched a six-inning complete game, giving up three earned runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out four. Both Shuck and Hale lost.
