MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Ohio State dropped a 6-4 decision to Minnesota Friday in the first game of a four-game Big Ten series at Siebert Field in Minneapolis.
Ohio State is 28-18 overall and 12-11 in Big Ten action, while Minnesota is 34-10 overall and 15-5 in the conference. The Buckeyes and Gophers will play games two and three of the series starting at 3:05 p.m. ET Saturday at Siebert Field. Saturday’s two seven-inning games will be followed a final nine-inning game at 2:05 p.m. ET Sunday.
Minnesota took advantage of a Buckeye error in the bottom of the third inning that led to three unearned runs in the inning and a 3-0 Gophers lead.
The Buckeyes got a run back in the top of the fourth. J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) led off the fourth with a double in the right center gap and came around to score on an RBI single by Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy).
The Gophers added to their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-1 advantage after six complete.
Ohio State didn’t go quietly, responding to Minnesota’s three runs in the bottom of the sixth with three of its own in the top of the seventh. Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) singled to start off the inning and moved to second on a failed pick off. Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) followed with an RBI single. Zach Hurley (Fr., Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) and Cory Kovanda (Fr., Croton, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) also singled in runs to make it 6-4. The Buckeyes were unable to mount any serious threats in the eight or ninth. Cory Luebke (Jr., Maria Stein, Ohio/Marion Local) started for the Buckeyes and was saddled with his first loss of the season despite a solid outing. He gave up six runs, but only three earned, in six innings, falling to 7-1 on the year. The left-hander allowed six hits, walked two and struck out five. Trey Fausnaugh (Sr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) and Eric Best (Fr., Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) each pitched one scoreless innings as the OSU pitching staff held the Gophers to just six hits.
Tom Buske picked up the win for Minnesota, giving up four runs, three earned, in 6.2 innings. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out three while improving to 3-1. Kyle Carr pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit baseball to earn his seventh save of the season.
The Buckeyes had eight hits in the game but were hurt by three errors.
