Just like game one, Purdue again took an early lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead. The Boilermakers added another run in the bottom of the fifth for a 2-0 advantage and held OSU scoreless until the top of the seventh.
The Buckeyes started the off the seventh with back-to-back-to-back singles by Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby), Ryan Dew (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) to load the bases with no outs. Cory Kovanda (Fr., Croton, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) followed with a chopper up the middle that the Purdue short stop whiffed on allowing Miller and Dew to score to tie the game and move Kennedy to third. Freshman Cory Rupert (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Kennedy for the game-winning run for OSU. Ohio State closer Jake Hale (So., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) came on in the bottom of the seventh and after retiring the first two batters, gave up back-to-back singles to put the tying run on second base and the winning run on first. But Hale got the next Purdue batter to hit a grounder to short where Rupert threw to Kovanda at second for the final out of the game. It was Hale’s tenth save of the year.
Josh Edgin (Fr., Three Springs, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) started for the Buckeyes and allowed one run, none earned, on three hits in 4.0 innings of work. He walked one and struck out six. Theron Minium (Fr., New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) relieved Edgin in the fifth and gave up one earned run in 1.2 innings. He allowed four hits and walked one. Trey Fausnaugh (Sr., Cricleville, Ohio/Westfall) relieved Minium with two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth. Fausnaugh got the next Purdue batter to hit a grounder to short where the Buckeyes forced out the runner at second to get out of the inning still trailing 2-0. Fausnaugh only faced one batter but earned the win, improving to 1-1 on the year.
Ricky Heines pitched a solid game for the Boilermakers, taking a shutout into the seventh. The Buckeyes finally got to Heines in the seventh, scoring three runs, two earned. He went 6.1 innings and scattered eight hits, striking out five and walking none. Andrew Groves relieved Heines and retired both batters he faced. Heines fell to 6-4 on the year.
The Buckeyes had eight hits in the game and the Boilermakers nine. Dew led OSU at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the game.
