WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ohio State lost to Purdue, 16-0, Saturday in the first game of a Big Ten doubleheader at Lambert Field in West Lafayette, Ind.
Ohio State is 24-12 overall and 9-7 in Big Ten action, while Purdue improves to 18-18 overall and 8-9 in the conference. Game two of the doubleheader follows Saturday afternoon and the Buckeyes and Boilermakers wrap up the four-game series with a nine-inning game at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. Ohio State won game one Friday, 6-2.
Purdue took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first and added two more in the bottom of the third for a 3-0 advantage. The Boilermakers stretched their lead to 7-0 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth with five hits and three OSU errors. Purdue put the game out of reach with an eight-run home half of the fifth to take a 15-0 lead. PU added one last run in the bottom of the sixth and retired OSU in the top of the seventh for the win.
Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) had two of the four hits for the Buckeyes.
Rory Meister (Jr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) started for the Buckeyes and allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits in 4.0 innings of work. He walked one and struck out three as his record fell to 3-4 on the year. Darren Sizemore (So., Hamilton, Ohio/Ross/Georgetown University) pitched the final two innings and surrendered nine earned runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out one. Matt Bischoff pitched the complete game four-hitter for Purdue to move to 2-0 on the year. He struck out five and walked none. The Boilermakers banged out 18 hits in the game.
