COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State gave up a one-run lead in the top of the seventh only to score three times in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-8 win over Indiana Saturday in the second game of a Big Ten doubleheader at Bill Davis Stadium.
The win improves OSU to 22-10 overall and 7-6 in the Big Ten. Indiana fell to 14-21 and 4-11 in conference play. The Buckeyes and Hoosiers will wrap up the four-game series with a nine-inning affair at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. Ohio State won game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, 4-3, and won Friday night’s game, 6-4.
Leading 6-5 heading into the top of the seventh, the Hoosiers pushed three runs across for an 8-6 lead and were just one inning away from winning game three of the series, but the Buckeyes had other ideas.
Jacob Howell (Sr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) led off the bottom of the seventh with back to back singles. Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) then pushed a bunt down the third base line but Indiana was able to get the force out at third, leaving Angle on second and Fryer on first with one out. J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) followed with a single through the right side that scored Angle to make it an 8-7 game. Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) walked to load the bases for Michael Arp (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg). Arp worked the count to 3-2 and garnered an RBI walk to tie the game at 8-all. Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) capped off the game-winning rally with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Shuck and set off an OSU celebration down the first base line.
Just like game one, the Hoosiers took the lead first, scoring three runs in the top of the first. But the Buckeyes would get one run in the first and five more in the second to take a 6-3 lead.
In the first, Fryer started things off with a two-out double and moved to third on a Shuck single. Miller followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1 after one. Kennedy and Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) led off the bottom of the second with back to back walks. Cory Rupert (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners but reached on a throwing error by the IU third baseman allowing Kennedy to score to make it 3-2. Howell grounded out to first scoring Zoeller to tie the game at three with one out. Angle followed with an RBI double down the left field line and Fryer made it 6-3 with a towering home run to left field.
Indiana would get back in the game and eventually take the lead. The Hoosiers scored two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 6-5 and added the three in the top of the seventh before the Buckeyes rallied to win the game.
Josh Edgin (Fr., Three Springs, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) started the game for the Buckeyes and went four innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out four. Trey Fausnaugh (Sr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) relieved Edgin and pitched 1.2 innings, surrendering two earned runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out one.
Jake Hale (So., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) entered the game in the top of the sixth looking to lock down his third save of the series but ran into a little trouble as he gave up two infield singles as IU made it 6-5. Hale then surrendered three runs in the top of the seventh, but only two earned. The OSU rally in the seventh gave Hale his first win of the year as he evened his record at 1-1. He went 1.1 innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits, three of the infield variety. Hale struck out one.
Jason Ferrell took the loss for Indiana, as he gave up five earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. He yielded seven hits, walking one and striking out four. Joe Vicini relieved Ferrell in the seventh but walked Arp and then gave up the sac fly to Kennedy. Ferrell is 3-3 on the year.
Ohio State had 10 hits and Indiana 14. Shuck was 3-for-4 at the plate and Fryer and Angle each had two hits. Fryer drove in two runs.
