COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior catcher Eric Fryer drove in all three runs as the Ohio State baseball squad rebounded from a game one loss to beat Ball State, 3-2, Wednesday in the second game of a non-conference, seven-inning doubleheader at Bill Davis Stadium. Ohio State is 19-10 overall, while Ball State is 15-21. The Cardinals won game one, 5-0.
The Buckeyes play host to Indiana Friday-Sunday in a four-game Big Ten series at Bill Davis Stadium. Game one, a nine-inning contest, starts at 6:35 p.m. Friday, followed by two seven inning games starting at 1:05 p.m. Saturday and a final nine-inning game at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
Ball State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Ohio State responded with a run in the bottom half of the first. Jacob Howell (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) led off the home half of the first with a walk and moved to second on a Matt Angle (Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) sacrifice. Fryer (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) followed with an RBI single to tie the game.
After a scoreless second for the Buckeyes, OSU took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Cory Rupert (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) started the inning off with a single and was moved to second by a Howell sacrifice. Angle followed with an infield single that left runners on first and second. Ball State then balked Rupert and Angle to third and second, respectively, setting the stage for Fryer. Fryer singled through the left side of the infield driving in both runs for a two run OSU advantage. The Cardinals cut the OSU deficit to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fifth but Ohio State closer Jake Hale (So., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) shut the door on Ball State for his seventh save of the year. Hale relieved Josh Edgin (Fr., Three Springs, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) with one out and runners on second and third in the fifth. He induced two ground balls to get the Buckeyes out of the inning with just one run for BSU. The big right-hander went 2.2 innings and gave up just one hit, striking out two. Edgin got the win to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Theron Minium (Fr., New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) started the game for the Buckeyes and pitched 2.1 innings. He gave up one earned run on four hits and walked two. Edgin relieved Minium with the game tied at 1-all and two runners on and one out. Edgin worked out of the jam without giving up a run. Edgin pitched two innings inning and gave up one unearned run on one hit. He struck out one and walked one.
The Buckeyes and Cardinals each had six hits in the game.
